Hm, are those elven wrestlers?

I didn't make the graphics and don't know much about graphics in general, so I don't know how much I can help.  But it might be worth trying to re-download; sometimes you get very subtle file corruptions that are enough to throw off DF.

You know, you could just use iron bolts...or even copper. A couple legendary markscats with those would tear the treants apart.

I think you're probably talking to me, not CaptApollo12, since I'm pretty sure he hasn't mentioned cats, treants, or anything else...  ;)

Anyway, I'm using cats. I don't have any bolts. Cats are too small to use crossbows, so they have to use blowguns and blowdarts, which deal 1/10 the damage of a same-material same-quality crossbow-fired bolt. I also did have some iron darts, but since they were all imported due to my lack of a suitable weaponsmith at that time they were all no or fine-quality, so my thousands of masterwork bone bolts were just as good or better. Even MW steel darts woudn't get through the treants damblock, so for me it's melee or traps.

Basically, for Fun's sake, I'm combining one challenge mod (CatSplosion, which makes the playable race the amusingly pathetic cats) with another, even harder challenge mod (Relentless Assault). There's not terribly much I can do against the treefolk without mass preperation, which I'm doing now. It's taking a while, though I think that I could probably take down a full siege with what I've got built at the moment.

Ha, I didn't even catch that you were using darts.  Not only do they do a tenth the damage in this mod, but they do gore damage--no wonder they were worthless against the nopain, bloodless high-damblock treants.

Maybe I should do the same thing to regular bolts.  I've heard treants can be killed by bolts in the current version, but in earlier ones they couldn't, which as Rebel found out can be a lot of fun...

Also, I never realised bolts did so little damage. I mean, I knew they did "little" damage, but not that little.  :-\

Um...well to defeat the treants, the only possible way would be to "cheat", such as smushing them with a bridge or dropping them into a drowning chamber. Cant quite think of any "actual" way with the military. With blowdarts being obsolete and any melee getting smushed....

You could try setting the treants on fire.  :D

Also Nil, treants get smashed to death by hammerdwarves, I suggest just increasing their size or other features, because from my experience they arent hard really unless you trigger them extremely early. Nurfing bolts will make everyone harder, since your the only race that uses bolts.

I'll keep that in mind; they're already kind of weak in workgen so a boost would be easy/beneficial to do.  Altho, if I were to switch the bolts to gore damage, it would disproportionately benefit the treants, since everything else bleeds and almost everything else feels pain.

Oh duh.  :P

How about boosting blowdarts? If I recall, only treants use blowdarts. If you make them more deadly, they would be (obviously) more deadly to marksdwarves.

Kobolds use them too, actually.  Right now I'm looking at +2 to both size and damblock with the addition of mauls to their available weapons.

It's probably because nil responded to Apollo and I in the same post, so you just mistook who had said what.

Bolts aren't actually that bad. It's blowdarts that suck. Bolts are actually reasonably lucky to damage a treant, while darts have very little chance of it.

Well, at the current moment I'm basically paving the path into my fort with scores of upright steel spike traps, which shouldn't have difficulty killing anything with repeated application. I could also kill things with magma, since I have magma right next to my entryway, but it would also destroy the path into my fort for quite a while since I lack magma-safe grates and mechanisms.

Initially I had intended to make a drowning/waterfall trap capable of filling the whole entryway on command, and even have a drainage pipe into the UG river dug, but now that would screw up some of my magmaworks for quite a while and I'd have to do too much redigging to make it worthwhile, so I'm just gonna stick with spiking the crap out of anything too worrisome.



Also, I don't think melee cats are in as much danger as you think. With layered quality steel armor, good wrestling skill, and good weapons, they should be able to take most anything down. After all, the difference between a cat and a treant is less than the difference between a vanilla dwarf and dragon, and I suspect that many of us have seen a champion solo a dragon easily

Bolts aren't actually that bad. It's blowdarts that suck. Bolts are actually reasonably lucky to damage a treant, while darts have very little chance of it.

Also, on the context of cats, cats cant use shields, and their weapons are less effective than normal weapons. But, dragons breath fire...so......but they also bleed and other bad stuff, so eh. - Could be wrong on this, never actually fought a megabeast, I usually get bored before it happens.

Also, treants dont have trapvoid, so if you get enough cage traps, you could just capture them all in the first siege or two.
