Are goblins fungi?
« on: October 16, 2009, 10:11:53 pm »

Where do they fit on the tree of life?

Eh? No, the Elves are fungi. Everybody else is animalia (animals, sapient and non-sapient).

Be gone with your wh40k ideas! Goblins in DF are Fluffy Wamblers corrupted by Tentacle Demons. Honestly, even my grandma knows that.

No, but plump helmets are.

It'd be interesting to speculate about where on the evolutionary tree all the species are related. I commented on this in the interracial breeding thread and I guessed that all the humanoid races are fairly closely related, about as much as all the real-life great apes are. Goblins could fit in there another few million years back. They seem to be just another race of humanoid, albeit with green skin and teeth. That's not too much to evolve for whatever reason, from a common ancestor with elves, humans, dwarves and gnomes.

Seeing as they have genders, and babies that are born breathing air (no eggs, etc) it seems to me that all the civilizations are sexually reproducing mammals.

Fungi can undergo sexual reproduction. From my Photo Atlas of Biology:
[petri dish image with line down center]
Figure24d: Culture plate of a bread mold (phycomyces) undergoing sexual reproduction. The vertical black line consists of zygosporangia formed as the result of fusion of gametangia produced by the "+" strain with gametangia produced by the the "-" strain.

Also, is there a rationale for the skin tone?

I think it'd help with camouflage.

True. Perhaps they were preyed upon something and lived in forest originally, thus the skin tone?

Common skin disease? Skin resistant to the aforementioned?

There are some fungi that have around 10000 genders.

Just saying.

I was going to say that maybe their skin has photosynthetic properties, which wouldn't work very well and I don't see them as the sun worshipping type. If there was a demon that represented the sun (they already represent fire, so it wouldn't be a stretch for that to happen), maybe, but by sun worshipping, I mean sunbathing and all that. Plus they live in towers made of obsidian...

What do you call a species that reproduces by kidnapping the children of other races? Not even the same species?

Goblins in DF have grey skin, though. Not green.

Goblins are like chameleons. They change color, but only based on the weapon they're holding.
