Okay, I'm going to start playing again.

Is this a regular thing?  I remember at one point it had been three years since the last label release!

Okay, so I downloaded this, because it looked like it'd be fun to mess with for a few minutes at least.  My thoughts-

What the fuck is wrong with this program?  The interface is non-existent.  None of the buttons do what the shortcut menu says they do.  No part of the screen works as the documentation describes.  The manual is trying to instruct me on how to play a completely different game.

There are no menus, keys, or literally a meaningful interface of any kind, except the most unintuitive mouse-movement system ever crafted.  How the Hell am I supposed to play this?  I really hope I'm just missing something, and that this program isn't as retarded as it first appears.

I don't know what shortcut menu you're talking about.  But you interact with the in-game menus in-game:  they appear on the wall of your craft, not as part of a hud.

As for why the interface is bad:  It's an OLD game.  Oooollld.

Yeah.  it's unintuitive.  It even sucks.  But you're playing a 3d DOS game.  You either get past it, or you can't stand it.

But... I get that the menu is actually part of the gamespace.  But how do I do anything with it?  The mouse obviously doesn't click on anything, and none of the buttons the menu describes do anything either, as far as I can tell.  They just type letters on the screen thing, which then do nothing.

And a game being old is no excuse for making mouse-movement be forward-backward movement and lateral mouselook, and the right-button sidestepping and vertical mouselook.  That's just insane.

Eh, I figure the author played too much Doom.  But it IS insane.

Sofia, or anyone else--do the various fan-mods do anything to change that?  Because it sure would be nice.

Speaking of nice, it might actually be NICE that you're after, or possibly you have the NICE manual but are playing original Noctis, if they aren't adding up...something like that.  I haven't played in a long time.

I don't know if there is, I really didn't need it. I kinda just snapped into the controls and they became second nature.

Same. Thank you for reminding me. I haven't played it for a while, I'm going to do it again.

Also, in terms of interface, DF is terrible at it too and it got some time for me to get used to multiple unintuitive commands, but with excercise it's no longer a problem.

I only played this game for a week before I knew about every planet and sun type stuff.  I can play it again, but ehhhh...

Also, I totally don't remember the controls AT ALL.

Yeah, for me Noctis is a kind of game you launch, enjoy for some time and then forget about it for a long time to let your interest arise again.

Alright, looks like it's the "Plus" version we want, not the "CE" version, if we're going to use the real starmap.  Plus NICE isn't being updated anymore so yeah.

I figure...if we're going to start some community logs...we probably want one of us to find a good starting point, and then post either coordinates or, more likely, that file that keeps your current status.  It doesn't really have any information besides "where is the ship", "are you on the surface? where?", "how much fuel do I have", and "is the light turned on"...  So if we start somewhere far away, that's the best way to do it.
