Strange Engravings
« on: October 16, 2009, 09:54:58 pm »

I just had the strangest engraving yet, it makes no sense at all and is slightly disturbing. The dwarf featured in the engraving is a Royal Guard who is currently alive and well. Here it is:

Look at his thoughts and preferences - he probably likes doors. I've personally seen an engraving of a marksdwarf surrounded by lizards and looking terrified (she detests lizards), one of a hammerdwarf admiring dogs (he likes them for their loyalty), and another of a dwarf devouring a rat weed (one of his favorite foods).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I think the dwarf being depicted in the drawings is being shown that they have a lot of choice in their life.

That dwarf who drew that... is a GENIUS!

how do I observe my engravings ?

1. k
2. move cursor over engraving
3. enter

However it's not entirely this simple. You will find that some engravings state, quite simply "An image of a dwarf and dwarves, the dwarf is surrounded by the dwarves." and that's it. If you however you abandon, go into adventure mode and seek out your fortress you can observe greater detail. It'll say "An image of a dwarf and dwarves, the dwarf is surrounded by the dwarf. The engraving relates to the election of Urist McCheese as mayor of burgerville."

Edit: When locating your fortress it's adviced to use an elf, as they are not attacked by common wildlife. Use a dwarf and you'll soon find yourself with wolves up your ass.

Oh and of course backup the save before abandoning.

"Ah, my dwarves are done engraving my barracks! Let's see what they put in there to motivate my soldiers..."

"...Carp."

The engraving itself isn't very odd, as I've been having trouble with the local pachyderms. It's the placement that makes it funny: right in the middle of my barracks. I guess my soldiers will be REALLY motivated now.

It's also possible to set things in the init file to reveal histories on engravings in fortress mode.

On another fort I got this one:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While such engravings are not a very unusual occurrence, notice that the engraving is entitled "The Lustful Simplicity", that the dwarven civilisation is called "The Lancer of Romancing", the group founding the fortress "The Construct of Skins" and the fortress itself "Inkstaff". Those are some horny dwarves!

While, Nomal, my Captain of the guard was laid up with a wound (that would take well over three years to heal), my engraver/Mayor came by and engraved this:

He had to sit there with that image for three years. My Mayor is an asshole.

I hate my engraver. All he draws are pictures of the orc civilization or pictures of the founding or elections of the fortress. I've had at least a dozen sieges, including two megabeasts and one of my hammerdwarves smacking an elite spear orc so hard he exploded (I checked in legends, that guy was a badass too, he had 46 kills to his name and had burned 3 towns as well as a dozen brutal executions). Ironically, this guy has a "very fertile imagination". Yea, fertile imagination my ass.

I've had a whole load of engravings of a 'Sarvesh lividbell' being awesome and slaughtering things and being praised and hailed. I thought it was one of my champions, with 70 kills to his name.
Just yesterday, one showed who he was. Worldgen dorf.

I have quite a few of elves and animals drowning, one of a drowning dwarf, and one of a burning goblin, which relates to the siege squad I engaged right by the moat and lost a champion to the dodge-over-empty-space bug.

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

It's just odd someone would engrave hidden moons, I mean, what do you have to do to make a picture like that?
