How uncommon is this?
« on: October 16, 2009, 12:52:48 pm »

I got a goblin attack on my fortress and there was a human in it. I always like looking at them to see what there history was, and I had collected a small list of names to look up.

I backed-up my save, abandoned my fortress, and started looking through legends. I saw this;

Is this a glitch or is a wagon supposed to be here? There was a human caravan that was attacked by some goblins, so I can only assume that is where it came from.

Wagons are actually considered living by DF, so it's not surprising.
Even so, I've never heard of this happening.

It's not a bug, wagons are considered creatures. I can't remember what causes them to show up in Legends, though.

It is a game feature or bug depending on how you look at it. Here is why.

Look in your raws. There is a file called "Creature_Equipment." This entry hold's the wagon's statistics including how much weight it can hold (you can safely double this weight without negative game effects).

Because the wagon is a creature, it is listed in legends along with all other generated creatures. They are fairly rare as far as I know, because they only spawn when a player has a fortress (the initial wagons and the caravans).

I am uncertain as to why wagons only appear in legends sometimes. The same could be asked of any creature entry. If the game generated 8734 creatures, what keeps some of them in legends and others out? I do not know.

However, it is fair game to call this a bug or at least unintended.

If you antagonize traders, can you get the wagons to attack you, then catch them and breed them?

The wagon is a noble creature of the Woodus Wheelus family. It is generally associated with the trainers it allows on. The wagon also has a tolerance to things on it's mighty back.
But do not think that the wagon is a peaceful species. They have been known to run over dwarves in bouts of rage. Keep your distance while observing* them. (*Read: Dropping lava on)

Why do you think the elves don't use wagons. Just because of the trees?

Does this mean there's a chance they'll bring one in a cage then?

I don't think it's possible they'd bring one in a cage; i'm fairly sure cage animals are generated randomly from the biomes that the towns occupy, Wagons don't have a biome, so they'd never end up in a cage.

If you gave them a biome then the Elves may indeed start turning up with Wagons in cages.

Hah, I may as well make a near-duplicate of a wagon in the regular creature raws.
Since they are such killers.
