Shell & bone stockpile - help!

Just like to say I love DF - best game ever made.  My wife, however, hates it  ;D

I have created a stockpile for my dwarves to store shells and bones.  This works great, but they do not seem to want to use bins/barrels with this stockpile - is there something I have to do for this to happen, or is it just that the base function of this stockpile is refuse and bins/barrels are not allowed?

I'm using df_28_181_40d.

Sorry, no bins or barrels allowed on the refuse stockpile by default. I wouldn't be sure how to mod shells/bones/skulls to stack in a container either.  :-\

Base function of refuse stockpiles. Sorry, but you'll have to use a LOT of space.

However, skull totems pile in bins, so set a workshop to produce those on repeat.

Bones, skulls, and shells can't be stored in containers aside from a coffin. Nothing you can do about that unfortunately.

There's always quantum stockpiling, but that there is cheating territory.

Really, this is the huge advantage to having a few soil layers.

How I manage this, is to have a huge stockpile that feeds a few closer to workshop ones. Keeping in mind that only one stockpile can draw from a source I chain as follows

(optional outdoor rotting room)->(big stockpile of all refuse)->(smaller stockpile of bone/skull/shell)->(skull/shell)->(shell)

That way I get the advantages of storage, with the advatages of use. And lots of hauling jobs (whee).

This plan also works for bars, blocks, and other raw materials.

Shells in particular, you might want to save a few somewhere behind a locked door in case a moody dwarf starts demanding them.

I just site the workshops next to the materials. I have no shortage of labour, after all.

Its always wise to make a few very huge refuse stockpiles. I use the maximum size of a stockpile, and usually make 3-4 of these. You will need haulers to move away all the loose stone, but you don't have to move it very far.

Once you've done this, you've created your catacombs that will last nearly forever. It will take dozens of sieges to fill up the boneyards, and all shells will remain there forever, thus giving you plenty of bone and shells to work with. You can also enable both refuse and graveyard functions for the stockpiles, so they can be your pauper's tombs until coffins are available.

With 4 such stockpiles, thats around 3600 tiles of space. This means I can store 3600 stacks of bones, skulls, and shells. More, if the corpse is dragged there before it decays, in which case bones and skulls will be in a single pile.

I just leave them all in the dump, and put a workshop right next door to produce an infinite chain of bolts. (Thanks to goblin sieges and a significant breeding population of tamed mountain goats and deer, I have no shortage of bones, and I never seem to do anything with shells anyway).

Also remember that miasma doesn't travel diagonally between tiles that have that as their only gap. I always have a rotting room set to accept all refuse except bones, shells, and skulls. And then a large stockpile for just those three things. The entrance to the rotting room is a checkerboard 2 lines thick so dwarves have to sidejangle to get through. And the miasma can't.
