A grave mistake?
« on: October 16, 2009, 02:32:12 am »

I recently adopted the tactic of dumping water on an exact pattern of magma to eliminate the need for drainage but noticed something screwy going on after my first test run..

I currently have a 33x11 room filled with obsidian (just dug out) and am stuck with a layer of obsidian floor in between where the water falls into my magma chamber from the above water-filled chamber.. I tried first to create a bunch of upward ramps when digging out the room, but to no avail. My attempts at channeling do not seem to work either, due to the bridges I have set up over the now impenetrable floor.

Is there any way to fix this?  :-\

Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you are using bridges to dump water on magma, they have to be TWO levels above the magma, three total:

Water
(empty)
Magma/Obsidian

If you left out the empty level, you're fooked.  :-\

Next time, read the wiki - either "magma" or "obsidian" leads to "obsidian farming" - it's all there.

Ah, that explains it.

I apparently missed the part about needing an empty level in between, but I suppose this can make for an easy fix if I just add a few walls here and there and dig down another level after removing the bridges and chiseling away at that floor though, right?

I'll check it out tomorrow then, thanks  :)

Yeah its a simple one to make, I've done it myself. Another suggestion for obsidian forges would be to design it for easy channeling.

http://mkv25.net/dfma/poi-18640-obsidianfactory

this is my obsidian factory from my most recent fort. When the obsidian was formed, all I had to do was just designate the obsdian to channel (hint, replacing the factory's walls and floors with constructed walls makes channeling a snap) and forget about it. The design allowed dwarves access to an exit regardless of where ever they were digging.

... I suppose this can make for an easy fix ... right?

If you've got the room to go down one more level, yes. So long as you can shut off the magma one way or another (thru linked barriers or by dropping water on the flow) it's all good.

You cannot channel/smooth ground that is on a bridge, whether the bridge is raised or retracted or not. Remove the bridges and you can channel away!
