I think it was somewhere around 18th Felsite, 210, Late Spring
by Asob Momuzzokun
-------------

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fire was at our front door.  Lots of dwarves were complaining that they couldn't do their jobs, but there was nothing to be said for it!  It was simply too dangerous.  So far, the fires hadn't claimed any casualties - by some MIRACLE, considering our most skilled miner and mason each decided to jeopardize their lives and our fortress's prosperity by jumping through the flames!!  Thankfully, they came to no harm.  They almost did it AGAIN on their way back, but they narrowly skirted around the side of the encroaching fire wall on their way inside.

FINALLY, by 24th Felsite, the fires died out, and dwarves were allowed outside again.  To prevent this kind of catastrophe from happening again, I immediately ordered the construction of a wall separating us from the tower at this elevation.

Zon actually came out of hiding for a bit to investigate where some of her rock friends were going.  When she saw the wall, she not only approved... she demanded that it be improved into a more defensive structure.  I don't recall her exact words, but I'm pretty sure I'm quoting her verbatim when she said "Urist always wanted to be a defensive fortification!  Asob, how about carving some holes in that wall and putting ballistas behind it?"

Ballistas??  Oy... We have 13 champions, and she wants to defend the fort with ballistas... well, whatever.  Don't get me started on what an undertaking THAT turned out to be!  Though to be honest, I think she just wanted a simple project that she didn't think could go wrong to help her recover from the big mistake she made with the magma tower.

I'm not sure, but I'm absolutely positive this happened on 9th Hematite, 210, Early Summer
by Asob Momuzzokun
-------------

Kib complained for a long time that her tomb isn't grand enough.  We engraved the walls to get it up to her measure...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was one of my favorites, mostly for its title.  'The Obstacles of Straw.'  The siege of 207 was one of our worst, and Mūthkat Sibrekshoveth's comical rendition of the dismemberment of Ngom Confinedscourges reminds me of our perseverance and tenacity as a race.  It isn't enough to simply crush a large, vile force of darkness into the red sand beneath our feet - we immortalize the victory, humiliating our enemy for generations to come.  Even if the fort should be abandoned or fall to our enemies, someone some day will see this, and we'll have the last laugh.

I miss when Zon laughed.  As it was, she just kept giving orders about the ballista wall from deep within the walls of the fortress.  At least they were sound orders... Boxes would be constructed to house two ballistas and ammo at each section of the wall.  Eventually, we would have a second level with enclosed walkways between, fortifications for marksdwarves, and a basement level that would somehow connect to the barracks.  That's good... at least she didn't allow a direct entrance to the inside of the fort.  If enemies stormed the wall and found the way in, they'd have to get through our training yard before reaching the fort proper.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What's frustrating is that Zon's blueprints were too wide!  Her build extends over the slope as well as into the mountain, meaning we need to foot a little extra work to construct everything where it needs to go.  Zon argued vehemently that this was her intent to prevent easy entry from the south, but I think she made a mathematical error somewhere in her planning.  We already have children deconstructing parts of the wall we hastily threw up before this was all planned out...

Surprisingly, we ran out of iron bars.  I thought for certain we had more... Oh well.  I instruct the newly forged iron statues to be smelted and converted back into iron, so that we can do it all over again.

And, as usual, the moment the humans were sighted, all work ceased as we moved to gather trade goods for the depot.  As we traded, 'Rick' Fountainclouded made a bloody mess of a goblin snatcher, spilling blood all around the thing's body.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And as soon as the snatcher was defeated, some goblins sprang from ambush just north of our gate.  It seemed to be a small ambush, so only mobilized a portion of the military - a few champions and a few recruits, so we could get our greenhorns some training under skilled supervision.

((DFMA)) ((Movie)) "Hyaaaaaaahhh!!"

That didn't work out as well as I'd hoped it would... Archibold was first to the scene and took out more than half the force by himself, rounding his kills off at an even 70 notable.  Any more notches on his hilt, and his (≡«-Iron Flail-»≡) is liable to break!  I tried to send that 'Overlord' guy to the fight, seeing as he's been gabbing on and on about how inspired he is by Archibold and he has posters of the guy chiseled out in the barracks and if he wasn't already a worshiper of Nikot the Ray of Robustness he'd declare Archibold his deity... but the poor guy slept through the fight.

Near the end of Hematite, Zon and I got into a huge argument.  Lots of jobs were being backed up because they were waiting for her validation, but she was spending all of her time hauling items, so work wasn't progressing.  In the end she conceded... but the look in her eye...

The toll's starting to get rough with demands and mandates.  I think I need to start taking notes.

Demands:
---------
1 Black Bronze Chest in Inod Glazenoses' Bedroom
2 Black Bronze Items
1 Shield
2 Idols
1 Silver Armorstand in Kikrost Bustcrimson's Bedroom

Prohibited Exports:
------------------
Grates
Picks
Black Bronze Items
Gold Items
Idols
Trifle Pewter Items
Tin Items

No question about it, it was definitely 20th Malachite, 210, Mid-Summer
by Asob Momuzzokun
-------------

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Asėn... I beg you, do you have an answer for this?  What were my eyes seeing?  I still don't understand.  Why?  Why would something like this even exist in the world?  Elves and humans and dwarves and parts of each and parts of things I can't even recognize... those that aren't dead and impaled on stakes are alive and traumatized.  There are carvings of dwarves in fetal positions, dwarves, dead... one's named "The Worthless Baby."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Remarkably (and frighteningly), we just barely missed these chambers while doing exploratory mining.  Just a few urists to the east and we'd have seen this terror a lot sooner...

Zon's been inconsolable since - it must have something to do with her disappearance.  She's seen this before in her past.  I... thought she was making it up, in truth.  I'd heard stories, but I've never seen it in person.  What do we do...?

The good news is, the plan worked.  We only breached the chambers via fortification, so if anything's in there, we're safe from it.  Technically, we could continue normal life without ever bothering it again... except eventually, we'll probably end up getting demands for adamantine items from the consorts, so we HAVE to get the adamantine out of there...

As I watch, some lumps of charcoal randomly catch fire and burn.  Random fires... at the time, I wondered what in the world could be in there??  It's obvious to me now, of course, but at the time I just didn't know what to think.

I reviewed some of Zon's standing orders, and there was a particular dig path that catches my eye.  To what end it served, I've no clue, but she's long suspected these chambers to be in this general area... Perhaps...

...Oh.  I think I see what she wants.  I wonder if that'll work...

I figured you'd find it sooner rather than later, considering how close that original adamantine hit was.

If you plan to eventually clear out the chambers, I suggest you train up plenty of marksdwarves - melee fighters tend not to last very long against creatures nearly 8 times as hot as magma (relative to a dwarf's body temperature, anyways)...

I've never dealt with HFS before.  Figures my first time would be against the fire-eating clowns.  That does screw up my original plans (which I'm still keeping secret because I'm going to try it anyway), though now I want to experiment with it a little.  Depends on how much I can pull off with my framerate as bad as it is now.

Every night since 20th Malachite, 210, Mid-Summer
by Asob Momuzzokun
-------------

My nightmares are filled with screams.  Almost every night, the same dream... what would happen if we just confronted whatever's in there directly?  Our military is strong...

((DFMA 1)) ((DFMA 2)) ((DFMA 3)) ((Movie)) ...but not strong enough.   No one is prepared for this... Even Zon blindly threw herself into the foe, only to be burned to a crisp... All of the fortress's champions dead...

I see the beasts of flame before me, and I turn and flee...  Even Zon hoisted her axe and ran fearless into her foe, despite the traumas of her past, and the hopelessness of the fight.  Yet I see myself in this dream a coward, a fool, cowering away as my friends turn to ash at my feet...

Near the end, there are only three enemies left, and all of them have somehow lost their legs.  They're prone and stationary, but still throwing fireballs in all directions around them.  Even as commoners mobilize to take them down, I cower away in a corner... and watch, hear, smell my world melt around me...

Probably definitely 22nd Malachite, 210, Mid-Summer
by Asob Momuzzokun
-------------

"In the name of Nikot!  Let me vanquish the foul demons below!"

"NO!"

It was fruitless.  'The Overlord' was upset to hear he missed his chance to kill some goblins alongside Archibold.  So, he wanted me to crack the chambers so he could fight the evils within by himself.

"The great and mighty Archibold Bridgebolt the Equivalent Ram of Artifacts may have 70 goblin kills to his name--"

"Her name."

"...What?  All the tales refer to Archibold as a male."

"I know, we keep getting it confused.  Happens all the time."

"...Whatever.  But can she claim to have killed a demon?  No!  One kill would surely put me on even caliber with Archibold!"

"You have no idea how many of those things are in there!  And Quietust has been doing that goofy human number thing... 'math' I think she calls it?  Anyway, she thinks these things are 2500 Urists hot.  Hotter than the surface of the big, glowing ball of nausea!  You'd burn to ash before getting anywhere near one!"

"...Soo... killing one will put me above Archibold's caliber!"

"Nobody's fighting them!  Everybody's work has slowed to a crawl since the discovery of these chambers, so we're dealing with them in the fastest way possible.  Zon and I have already discussed a plan."

"Gather everybody in the dragon's den and wait for somebody to open it?  I'll rally the troops."

"No, I already tried that-- I mean, I have a pretty good idea how that'll turn out!  Now, go train in the barracks, work your way up to a champion or something.  Trust me, you'll be called when you're needed."

In truth, Zon did have a plan.  I was right about those odd tunnels she had planned but never started.  Before we knew what was in there, she'd wanted to obsidian cast the inner chambers completely.  Once we'd had a glimpse, we figured it might not be possible - whatever is in there is hot enough to boil water from several Urists away, and we kind of need water for an obsidian cast!

That plan hasn't changed, but rather evolved - now she wants to trigger a cave in while simultaneously pumping water and magma inside.  So, we've given orders to carve some chambers in the two levels above to the exact dimensions of the top level of the chamber.

Hm, speaking of that top level... There's something really peculiar about its shape...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had to draw a picture of the demons in my dream next to our diagram of the top floor of the chamber.  They look awfully similar!

This plan prompted the argument between Zon and King Minkot that I had mentioned.  Minkot claimed the plan was undwarfy, since it was a non-confrontational method of dealing with the denizens of the deep.  He commanded the same thing that Overlord suggested - a full frontal assault.

And... that was when Zon lost it, backed the king into a corner, and it all came out.  I wasn't there for the initial argument, but Zon came to me practically in tears afterward.  She finally told me about previous experience with a pit like this.  Hers wasn't generating tons of heat and causing spontaneous fires within, though.  She said they had been frog demons, and she claimed they had been sent from below to avenge her for using live frogs as bait when fishing.  One almost killed her, but she grabbed an axe from a fallen soldier nearby and decapitated it with a lucky swing.  That explains why she's taken up tree cutting...

After that, she gave up competing altogether - she continued fishing, but she switched to worms.  Good thing there isn't a type of demon that looks like a mass of wriggling worms!  That would be downright terrible if Zon ever saw one.
