Infinite storyline possibilities exist ;)

It's up to Kenbo either way.

Many of the ores and rocks in DF have incorrect relative melting points. He could just fix any one of the appropriate types to make it magma proof.

Hmm... I count a total of 30 magma outlet holes on the tower. If you seal up a few of the holes, it might be feasible to use something similar to this and get the result you're looking for - hook up each pressure plate to a magma-safe (probably nickel) floor hatch covering one of the holes, using a raw adamantine mechanisms in the floor hatch itself (but not in the pressure plate - dolomite or basalt is fine for that), and let it run; with only one hatch open at a time, the magma will be forced to exit through that hole until the next hatch opens, at which point the current one will close and force the magma to flow through the new path.

Mind you, I haven't tested this yet, but I think it'll work.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The challenge is as vanilla as possible, with the exception of cat mouth and turning off sieges in Autumn to ensure the dwarven caravan comes to admire the dead Dukes.  I'm not going to mess around with the raws...

Quietust, that looks like something I'm bound to screw up exponentially more and more the longer I take to make it.  I have no choice but to proceed blindly with reckless abandon.

Dwarven planning for the WIN! Even if we screw ourselves over royally in the end, it's still awesome!

dang. no messing with the raws means no making steel mechanisms instead of the adamantine ones. that's what I was going to suggest.

Shortly after I woke up this morning, I realized that the N-step cyclic repeater (detailed here) runs with two pressure plates active at any given moment, so in order to work with this floor hatch system, the repeater need twice as many stages as there are floor hatches such that every other pressure plate is hooked up to a floor hatch, otherwise it won't work quite as expected (i.e. certain holes will never release any magma). It should also be explicitly noted that, for this design, fewer floor hatches is better, since the repeater will effectively only be able to switch the output once every 200 steps (which works out to about 6 times per in-game day).

Just for fun, and to redirect all the attention from the failed magma path, I'd like to include some fun facts about everyone's favorite metal.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Of course, that's just my experience, but that adamantine is now starting to look really tempting, what with the need for magma-proof mechanisms and all.

Hmmm. Kenbo already can tell what stones are safe to mine by smoothing and fortifing (sp?), but that could speed up the process. And my fort is going after adamantine, and this will be my first time doing it. Thanks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In Wasprag, the pits spanned 4 Z-levels (30 SoF and 1 red guy), while Towerclouted only had 3 Z-levels (20 SoF + 1 red guy). I don't know if there's an upper limit on the size of the pit.

I swear I've seen maps on DFMA that had pits that were at least 5 deep.  Didn't know about the up-and-out thing, though...  Just so you know, no I haven't sprung it and savescummed, so I really don't know where the pit is or what I'm going to find inside.

Oh, and I'm still alive, just busy like usual.
