Why does one dwarf refuse to train at the archery range?
« on: October 15, 2009, 09:46:09 am »

He's set to use a crossbow on the military screen, but refuses to train in the archery range even though I'm swimming in wooden bolts and all his other squad members are training. Why is it? Is it because he's already an elite wrestler? I've had a few dwarves like this in previous forts before.

A shield and a crossbow, he isn't carrying any bolts.

Check to see if he's holding anything else in his hands. I've had dwarves who were holding another dwarf's pants in the same hand they had their crossbow in. It happens.

A crossbow takes two hands doesn't it? The shield might be inhibiting him.

You all do know that we everytime we gen a world in DF, a new universe is created somewhere, and everytime we delete a save we kill a whole world?
Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

It is.  Bucklers act the same as shields, but block less often.  But Shields will always count as occupying a hand.  Bucklers don't count as taking up a hand when using a Crossbow.

That might apply to some other two handed weapons as well, like the Longsword, but I'm not sure.

Just switch him to a buckler and he will be fine.  Right now, he is seeing the crossbow as a hammer.

Ah, alright.

But all my other marksdwarves are using shields and it doesn't bother them.

Crossbows only require one hand to use, but, unless a dwarf has a quiver equipped he will need to carry all his bolts in his hands which a shield will prevent.  Tell your dwarf to stop using shields.

Wait, I realised that the two dwarves who refuse to train somehow are holding extra equipment. Once I had them dumped they trained without any problems, while holding shield.s
