Bauxite Mechanism
« on: October 15, 2009, 07:28:19 am »

How do I make one? I have bauxaite but a thousand other diffrent stones, and is it alright if I have an obsidain floodgate to stop magma as long as I have the bauxite mech?

I think the floodgate has to be Bauxite (or some magma safe metal) if it is going to be submerged, but if you're just need to permanently plug up a hole, any material would be fine.

As for making the bauxite mechanisms, put some bauxite into the same room as your mechanic workshops. Or if you have the econ stone mod, just mark everything but bauxite as red.

Make sure the workshop has bauxite as the closest stone.

Now, I wouldn't make the floodgate out of it as well. It needs to be magma-safe, but if you have magma you've probably got garnierite somewhere, and that means a lot of magma-proof nickel!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Not necessarily - my current and previous fortresses had magma but no gabbro layers, so the only nickel I ever got was imported from caravans. If your region has bauxite, it's highly likely it also has magnetite, which is by far the most abundant source of magma-proof iron you can get (aside from goblinite, of course, but that requires some additional work to extract and refine).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Bauxite IS magma safe. If you have locally mined bauxite, you will have plenty to spare for making a floodgate out of it. If your bauxite is imported, then its reasonable to save the bauxite and make the floodgate out of something else.

"Closest" stone is, unfortunately, not determined by path, but by straight line distance - and in three dimensions.  So if some microcline is 10 levels straight down*, that's "closer" than the bauxite stockpile that's 11 tiles down the hall even if it takes miles of walking to get to that microcline.

(* actually, anywhere w/in 10 tiles of that point, since DF distance is shaped like a cube.)

The failsafe way is to create a bauxite-only stockpile in the same room as a mechanic's workshop, and lock the mechanic in there with it.

If I want to make mechanisms out of a specific stone, I tend to stockpile the stone I want near it, and queue up 5 or 10 jobs.  The first job will be filled by whatever stone is closest to the mechanic when he accepts the job, but all the ones after that should use bauxite.

If I'm going to make *a lot*, I'll make sure he can be locked in with some food and water.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I never said it wasn't. Just noting that it's more precious than an abundant ore.

Another option if your bookkeeper keeps records precise enough is to start forbiding all other stone types (z to access records, highlight stocks and arrow down to stone)

(which is a great way to forbid most of your workshops accidentally - just be careful of that.)  ;)

Garnierite isn't necessarily an abundant ore.

Sadly, this doesn't work on older forts, where it can take over five minutes just to load the stone stocks screen.

Sorry, it just sounded like you were implying that it wasn't.

@rhuntar: using the economic stone menu works very well for this. The economic stone mod is found in many bigger mods, Maydays Graphics pack and Dig Deeper are two that I know have this, I'm sure there are more.
