He ripped it off someone else during wrestling and is now using it as a club via wrestling skill.

Dump it so that the original owner can put it back on.

It's not uncommon for this to happen. In the epic tale of Headshoots (a "Lets Play" from SomethingAwful, just like Boatmurdered), the champion HolisticDetective was trained to be an axedwarf, but routinely beat goblins to death with a ≡giant rat leather backpack≡.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

One of my champions was recently discovered to be running around beating things to death with dog leather armor.

Although this was duly noted to be awesome, it did mean she wasn't using the hammer that was in her other hand.  I only noticed because her hammer skill never even increased to dabbling.

So, yeah.  It's awesome and all, but chances are incredibly high your champion isn't actually using that sword they're carrying around.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I had the same problem with an axedwarf using shield and axe in one hand and a high boot in the other.
Beats me how he got it off the original owner.

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

My best warrior in my current fort is using two obsidian short swords in his right hand :P
He's got 101 kills! ;D
So I guess it's possible to carry a lot in one hand.

A dwarven hand is the size of a turkey and probably sticky enough that they could probably, if the code allowed it, climb on walls like Spiderman, thanks to the fact that bathing isn't in yet.

Wasn't it possible in the 2D era to get a dwarf to octuple-wield?

In adventurer mode you can always pull items out of your backpack. If you put multiple shields in your backpack you can pull them out and wield them all. Each shield adds to your block chance so after a while you become this unstoppable juggernaut of blocking. That is of course until a random peasant grabs you and breaks your arms.

Hah! He could hold that sword with one finger!
Chainmail is a very difficult to grasp item. You should commend him for his skill!
