"From the Underworld"? (Possible fun spoilers inside)

Well, I was playing what I intended to be a long term fortress, but I embarked without an anvil and the dwarven king seemed to be dead and no caravans from the humans or the dwarves ever came. So, I decided to dig into a demon pit and just end it, leaving a good spot for adventuring in the process.


But when I went into the "glowing pit", it instead said this.



Weird. But it didn't stop there. Instead of demons, the whole pit was full of caged Elves! Now, that's not so bad, but some Umies were there too.



Strangest of all, each person(and Elf) had this odd tag next to their name.



So, any ideas?

You should probally know that the Clowns are cloaked untill the dwarves find them.

Man that was my same reaction.  I wanted to save the humans end elves, but they all went crazy.  It was very saddening.

Actually, they're usually uncaged, and the true sign is when they show up on every floor of the chamber rather than just at the bottom. The filth and "unknown substances" also tend to make it obvious, as do the naughty pictures engraved on the floor.
