Stray animal... hostile?
« on: October 14, 2009, 04:23:29 pm »

For some reason, two of my stray Hippos are Hostile to me, despite being tamed and tied up.

What effects will this have? What might be the cause? I've not lost any dwarves to them, and on of the two is missing an eye.

Are you sure they didn't kill something? If one is missing an eye that's a strong pointer to yes. It could have even been a merchant or something.

Animals which were present on the map when you embarked (rather than having migrated onto the map) seem to be rather buggy in that they will spontaneously become "Hostile" in the Units list after you have tamed them, even if they have never killed another creature.

Despite being marked as Hostile, though, they will not actually attack your dwarves. The net effect is that you can no longer make them available for adoption, designate them for slaughtering, or assign them to cages or restraints, and caravan guards will attack and kill them. However, when they die, your dwarves will be able to butcher their remains regardless of them having been Stray animals.

This bug has been reported numerous times - the original thread looks to be here. This happened in my own fortress with a Giant Cave Spider, though I was fortunate enough to have already placed it in my silk factory beforehand.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The caravan guards thing is a good thing to know, since I have them in a walled-off room in the temporary aboveground compound. The odd thing is that, contrary to your statement, I do have them tied to ropes. Perhaps this only applies if they're not being transferred from one chain directly to a cage or other chain.

Either way, one's a male and one's a female, so I'm definitely going to use them for breedstock. None of the hippo calves thus far are hostile, so it should work.

I always thought that it was named creatures that are buggy / hostile when tamed (named by making a kill.. Oddly, on a side note, skeletal gremlins on my map seem to get named spontaneously every now and then, without making a kill).

The false taming problem also happens with dragons, who are not on the map on embark...
I'll try to do a check when my Dungeon master arrives. I have got 1 uncaptured, unnamed GCS left on my map that was there on embark.
One other GCS is in my silk farm. It's named, so even if I had a Dungeon master, I wouldn't bother taming it.

The hostility of named creatures is entirely separate from the "Hostile" label mistakenly applied to tamed feature creatures - while the former actually become violent toward your citizens, the latter are perfectly peaceful.
