A few questions, mostly about magma.
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:14:49 am »

Greetings from first time poster McDolomite,

As dwarvish  administrator trainee I have learned the basics of penetrating stone,  mushroom growing and selling useless souvenirs to elven caravans and so on.

But that isn't all it takes to build a real fortress.
I've yet to set up a metal and a glass industry as well as build a mega project.

Maybe you can help me with some things.
Its about the important things in life: Magma!
Do magma vents spawn magma creatures, or are they done with, as soon as the population is killed?
And does such a vent by chance provide a endless amount of magma? It seem to reach to the bottom of the map.
*visions of a majestic magmafall into the lokal chasm. Or maybe a magma see with a dam? A dam made of glass? The biggest lava lamp of all dwarfkind?...*

Nevertheless I may have to protect the magma forges with a grate, as far as I know preferably magma safe.
Is there a way I can order a bauxite grate to be made at the masons workshop, or do I have to forbid all other stones just to make him build one?

Looking forward to your answers

- magma creatures do not respawn once killed (they used to spawn though, in the old 2d version)
- magma pools are finite, but do not go all the way to the bottom
- magma pools refill, albeit slowly. They go all the way down, to the bottom z-level
- locking a dwarf in a workshop with only bauxite will do the trick as well

Also.. Welcome to the forums :)

Fixed that for you.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

My bad, then it's called pipe not vent.
All the better, feels good to have unlimited supplies. Even when it turns out to be unlimited firey death.  ;)

Thanks for the help.

Magma pipes refill, but slowly.  If you set up a magma waterfall that pours into a chasm, you'll probably end up emptying the pipe a lot faster than it can refill.
