Finished goods bins not on Trade Goods list
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:05:38 am »

I have a 4x5 finished goods stockpile 2 steps from my trade depot, it's completely filled with bins.  And yet, when I go to the (g) move goods to/from depot menu, the bins (and all of hte items in them) are not on the list.  The other finished goods (i.e. the ones still in the craftsdwarf's workshop) are still there, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the stockpile right next to the depot.  Any ideas?

Select the 'Sort by distance' option when moving goods to depot. Could also try selecting by name, cant remember if that sorts it out by distance as well.

I searched the entire list of "crafts" trade goods, which is where I've always found these items before.  The list was actually very small, since almost all my stuff was in the stockpile.

If you have any nobles, they might have imposed a trade export ban. If that bin contains any goods that are banned, it will, by default, not show up on the goods list at the depot. In the same list, however, is an option 'cull on mandates'. Try switching that.

Do not export banned goods however, unless you like dwarven Justice.

The banned exports will show up in purple on the depot list. I generally will find whatever goods my nobles like and make them their own separate stockpiles so that it doesn't interfere with my trade goods.

If you've got "cull on mandates" on (as it is by default) banned exports won't even show in the move to depot screen, and neither will their containers.

Are the bins full of crafts or full of mugs?

For some reason, mugs don't count as "crafts" when bringing them to the depot, so the only way to select them is to select the "All" section and filter it on "finished goods".

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

<nods>

Yeah, a real pain, no doubt.

For bins full of mugs (which I often rely upon), I have these strategies:

1) Finished Goods bins full of mugs are often about the same value - and if of flux-stone (or certainly obsidian!), very valuable.  Easy to spot early if you sort by value rather than distance.

2) Ballpark the distance from the Depot to the stockpile.  Find them all at that distance.

3) As suggested above, use the > s > function and type "finish" - that'll bring them up. With the above, you should be able to spot which are which if you have other goods bins as well.

No mugs at all, just "rock crafts," amulets, earrings that kind of stuff.

I just tried the mandate thing, I guess that was it.  I assume it's from my duke prohibiting the export of goblets, but there are many bins that don't have any of the restricted items, yet still only show up when I turn on "ignore mandates."  So does that mean that if there's only one restricted item in a stockpile, none of the bins in it will show up?  That seems silly.

Meh, then they won't tend to be as mass produced is all, so not as many of them probably.  Same approach.

(Don't know about the "1 banned item" problem.)

The only thing mandates should exclude is bins that contain at least one banned item - if mugs are prohibited, then a bin with 30 crafts and 1 mug won't show up for trade. It shouldn't matter if a bin of crafts is in the same stockpile as a bin of mugs.

Still, nobles can slap on an embargo after you have sold the stuff already and you can't really just say, sorry, gotta take that back. Yea there are ways of forcing them to drop them, but once the caravan has left....

That's true, but there are ways to kill the noble before the caravan leaves the map. There are ways to slow the caravan down, too.

I've had experience with this.

Nobles that like common trade goods are nobles that will probably end up dead in my fortresses. I'd much rather have a noble that likes rose gold and floodgates rather than one that likes pig tail, rope reed, green glass, goblets, mugs, rings, amulets, idols, harps, flutes, drums, and any of the common trade goods. Far easier, and less dangerous, to please.

Playing in the Dwarf Master's 2 competition, I had two legendary stone carvers cranking out "Rock Crafts".

I had a consort who, from the moment she arrived on the map, banned the export of scepters.

After a few seasons, I had 30+ bins next to the Trade Depot that wouldn't show up to trade, because each had one or two scepters in.

Ended up setting up a scepter stockpile in her room, and keeping scepters out of the Trade Depot stockpile, which, once I sold the rest of the non-scepter stuff in the bins, eventually solved the problem.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

There's actually a bug (which I've reported) related to export bans: if the ban is on something that's stored in bins, dwarves will only get punished if you sell the bin itself - if you go through the trouble of manually selecting every item within the bin, the game won't be able to figure out who brought it to the depot and nobody will be punished. Wasprag (my current fortress) has been exporting scepters and amulets for decades despite export bans placed by my Mayor and Duchess Consort, yet my Z-Justice screen states that "There are no criminals".
