Hmmm, if the philosopher thing was something that had its own skill, that would open up some fun possibilities, too. I would love an outpost that's simply a group of philosophers, tired of life in the busy mountain homes, who seek solitude to think and discuss. Soon migrants (preferably only ones that either like intellectual discussion, agree with one or more philosophers, or are philosophers themselves) flock to the philosophers' outpost in a monastery-town kind of way.

What is magma but an embodiment of Dwarven-kind's interest in effecting the world around them?

At first I thought this was a simple affect/effect typo. But then I realized that this is a subtle philosophical statement; dwarves don't simply affect, or change the world around them, they effect, that is, put into place the world around them by knowing, thinking, and observing. In essence, the universe doesn't create consciousness, consciousness creates the universe. Thank you sir. I have been enlightened.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

"And in the twilight of the mouth of the cave, the geode hatched and the Brothers were born. The first Brother walked towards the light, and stood under the open sky. Thus he became too tall. He was the first Man. He found no Laws, and he was enlightened. The second Brother walked towards the darkness, and stood under a roof of stone. Thus he achieved the correct height. He was the first Dwarf. He found the Laws Tak had written, and he was endarkened." ~ Terry Pratchett

Back on topic (sorry!):

The whole "school of thought" idea would be pretty cool. On the subject of major effects, however, I feel it should come down to whatever the civ sets, at least initially. Starting at the first count-type noble, the "economy" kicks in, but the actual system (capitalist, socialist, bartering, what-have-you) would vary between civs. Political structure, as well, could vary, although the effects would be felt from the beginning of a fort. Then, your philosopher starts in, not working so much from the individual dwarf, but with nobles. By converting them to his school of thought, real change could take place. Of course, this doesn't exclude the possibility of a dwarven socialist democratic uprising, just makes it less likely. Also, it means that the king/dictator/president/god-emperor could actually do something. Always a plus.

Religion could lead to Fun. Being the victim of a Crusade from another civ? Dwarven [insert the history of europe, post-protestant reformation]?

Scientific/metaphysical philosophy could attract dwarves based on preferences and maybe mess with thoughts, but probably wouldn't do all that much. When did we see wars over the koan of thesius's ship? Or the sayings of Confucious?

Ooh that's a good one. Will he lower the drawbridge during the siege so he can go stargaze?
Of course!  Although, more seriously, maybe he would request a special observatory on the surface (minus a roof, or minus a full roof) to stargaze safely.
Why not have a room with a star chart called "Observatory"? The philosopher will gaze into the sky as long as there is one tile of Outside Surface.

you know, we're talking about a dwarfish philosopher here.  As we all know, dwarves much prefer good solid earth to open airy (ugh) sky.  A dwarven philosopher therefore must spend a lot of time staring at boulders in order to seek philosophical wisdom and to read peoples' astrolithiology

I can't help but think that the philosopher's philosophical movement should be codified as a set of ETHICS tags.
As for dwarven divination, I imagine that, aside from stuff like entrails and palms, they could just sit in the deepest, darkest place they can find beneath the fortress and listen.
