Games based on exploration?
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:25:14 pm »

Does anybody know any good games focused on exploring? I always liked just looking around for some reason and something like that would be great, though I don't know of any...

Does anyone else know any?

Sid Meiers: Pirates! (not really)
The Elder Scrolls games (morrowind/daggerfall are the best for exploration.)
Space Rangers 1 & 2.

It's late, that's all I can think of.

Unreal World (Minimum $3 US)
Exile 2 and Exile 3, but unlike Blades of Exile, it isn't freeware yet.
I spent several months on the game and still haven't found a whole bunch of stuff. Like a cure for the vampire's curse :<.
Darklands... sorta.
Notrium comes to mind, but it isn't that big.

There's Arkham Asylum if you want something new and big name.  Half the game is about hunting around for little details, partly just as the plot, but most of it is just for your own amusement, but you still get rewarded.

The other half of the game is beating people up as only the Goddamn Batman can.

The Metroid games have a strong exploration focus, if you don't mind lowering yourself to the level of us dirty console gaming peasants.

i've often wanted to check out ad astra (http://www.a-astra.com/) but have never been able to get into it.  it looks cool, though.

also, its a "20 minute game", but Wierd Worlds is a pretty awesome casual exploration game.  its predecessor Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is now free.

if you really hate yourself, theres always the Derek Smart (3000ad) games.

First ten minutes of play I ate my loincloth and then got some limbs torn off by a super friendly rat. Thumbs up from me.

Ooh, lots of suggestions already. Though I've already played some Niffilas games and Morrowind.

Noctus looks very intresting, ill have to try that out as soon as my laptop works again.

Also on console gaming, why would there be any problem with that? The first game I ever played was Donkey Kong on a junky colecovision I had to partially fix myself.

Edit: Also have I started a request fad? Is it follow the Kitty day? XD

7 Cities of Gold

seconded.  there is an aniversary edition floating around on abandonia, but it lacks some of the features and depth of the original. see if you can find the old 1984 version for comodore or atari, and run it on an emulator.

abandonia does suggest some good "related" games if you check out their 7cog page.

It took until the fifth reply for somebody to mention Noctis? The game IS exploring; it eats, drinks, breathes, god knows what else exploring.

Ever hear of Yume Nikki? It's technically an RPG Maker 2k game (a fact that has probably already driven the reader away from it) yet its masterful design could convince you otherwise. Yume Nikki means "Dream Diary" though "Nightmare Diary" would be much, much more accurate.

There's no combat, but rather a quest to find a certain number of strange essencey things that give you slightly different abilities or appearance. It can be extremely eerie. Google "Uboa".

Oh I actually tried Yumi Nikki but the controls were messed up for me. I really couldn't move or anything...

And why would It being an RPG maker game effect me? I loved playing around with that. X3

Well, I'm not sure about anyone specifically, but a lot of folks view RPG Maker games with disdain sometimes, even when something really good is made with it!

Aww, shoot. Shame it didn't work; it's a really atmospheric, fun ride.
