How do you pick things up without igniting them?
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:58:30 pm »

I started my first Adventure game.  I walked over to a bush, and pushed "G".  My option was, "ignite prickle berries".  So, I did, and the bush started burning.

...I have managed to pick up a beetle and a rock.  But whenever I try to get food from a bush or tree, my only option is to ignite it.  Is my dwarf defective?

Nah, you just can't do that yet. It stinks, I know.

If you need food, you could always sneak into a human town, get into a house (House, not shop!) and grab the food from the barrel inside. I did that and I had no one attack me.

But, if you travel around on the world map, you're not going to need food, as hunger and thirst is being removed by travelling too. Food and drink are more important for sweeping through bigger caves or crossing that huge glacier/mountain range.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

If you're playing a no fast-travel challenge, the best method of getting food is to "L", find some live vermin, pick them up by pressing "g" and then eat them with "e". You can't eat them until you are STARVING however.

Make note that the capitalization matters oh the shortcuts

If your thirsty/dehydrated you can also drink blood.

I also found that if it's raining, or you are swimming, you can (for example) lick the water coating off your ear to quench your thirst.

Thanks for the responses!  Unfortunately, my adventurer - already a pro wrestler, extremely strong and extremely tough - got his throat ripped out while playing with a naked mole dog.  Beware.

I didn't know dwarves had such big ones.

The mental image of this happening amuses me.

*Picks up a stick*
*Stick bursts into flame*
"Damn it not again!"

Followed by the sequel:

Townsman:"Hey Urist come over here!"
Urist:"Yeah what?"
Townsman:"I need you to hold this Lignite block for me while I lay down the mortar for our lignite temple."
Urist:"Okay"
Retired Adventurer: "DON'T DO IT URIST!"

To the dorf pulling the lever, the lever is just a lever. The magma pouring out of the mountainside is just a coincidence. To the dorf designing a pump stack from the magma sea, it is just that: a pump stack. No specific reason for it. It will never do anything.
for reasons best knows to themselves, the elves decided to explode

Or you could, you know, buy 'em.

Alternately, go fishing. Jump into a water-source, catch some vermin fish, and jump out of the water. They'll proceed to air-drown and become edible.

I never saw any fish the whole time I was adventuring.  And I visited a LOT of streams and ponds.  The only vermin I saw were a turtle, a rat, and some roaches.  I would walk for dozens and dozens of screens without seeing a single animal...  very different than in fortress mode.

I've never seen vermin fish, either.  A few fireflies, though.
