Damage from Falling
« on: October 13, 2009, 03:48:00 pm »

How many z-levels, as rule of thumb, will cause an enemy to suffer:
1) no injuries
2) minor injuries
3) major injuries
4) death

Are any creatures immune to falling?

What creature characteristics reduce damage from falling?

The Morul thread (most interesting dwarf) has animals falling 3 z levels to get a 20% chance of death or 20% chance of red injury. But I read it yesterday so check it yourself.

Not that simple.

Larger creatures are tougher, smaller ones more fragile.  Also, there's a HUGE randomizer in any damage or combat - anything is possible.

However, iirc...

1 z-level is a stun only (and usually a guaranteed one).

5-6 z-levels is usually a crippling injury to a Hammerer dwarf size 7 creature.

There's also a bug that if a creature lands on another creature, they take no damage. (This includes landing on another creature in magma, which results in a creature apparently swimming in the stuff.)

From there, you're on your own.

. . . if a creature lands on another creature, they take no damage.

The falling creature takes no damage.  What about the creature who got fallen on?  Can a dwarf be injured from having an orc fall on him?  Or the orc's helmet?

Both take no damage.

If a titan falls on a kitten, both will walk away unharmed.

*Nod* Someone made dwarven drop pods with kitten cushions some time back, as I recall.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

And if we just had a way to shoot dwarves upwards, we'd have everything we'd need to make dwarven elevators.

OK, so a creature falling on a dwarf does no damage.  But I'm pretty sure that a rock falling on a dwarf will hurt (and usually kill) him.  What about other stuff?  Wood?  Armor?  Weapons?  Blocks?  Bars?

Actually, no, the only instance of a falling object hurting a dwarf is the stonefall trap or a cave in. You can rain rocks and whatever else onto your dwarves and they will be unharmed.

Only creatures have this kind of collision interaction.

No. To all and more.

smj is correct - the only falling thing that can hurt a dwarf is a cave-in.  A falling catapult stone, or a stone that gets dumped, or a (single) stone that has been deconstructed over empty space will never hurt anything.

Stop thinking real-life, or role-playing, this is a separate game, with its own rules.
