Great idea   :D  
I think the simple form of this is to create production orders for things that can currently be queued in the manager.  Things like shells, plants, meat, etc. can't be made there.  Queuing doesn't bother checking pre-reqs, it just keeps the order in place.  If you need more pre-reqs, make them!  Unlike a production order, "keep item in stock" would last forever.

Later, more complicated orders could be made for the raw materials... keep wood in stock and they'd pick new trees to chop down.  Keep meat in stock and they'd slaughter unavailable animals.  Keep plants in stock, and more planting would be queued.  I'm not sure how worthwhile these are, because you need to plan ahead anyways to be efficient... but for a huge fort, automated might be more desirable than maximum efficiency.
