I'd be all for resetting the karma, perhaps more often than annually, too, but I think the games played/hosted should carry over.

It'll be impossible to read that way though. How would "2 karma with 50 games played" be read as?  The only reasons to keep the games played list is to see who played longer than others and to see what you've done so far..none of which have anything to do with attendance.

I'm planning to lock this thread when the new year hits so the games played will be around to be revisited (as well as the old karma).

Starness will NOT carry over.  Flaking from ONE game 2 years old should not damn you for all future games.  Even if I don't reset anything, the stars WILL reset back to double star.

It sounds like a good idea to keep the old thread around and locked, though I'd like to try to get the backlog up before then.  That'd make it easy to keep track of the total games we'd played in, etc.

Heh.

Its most impressive you can even manage stuff like this with as few mistakes as you do. I have a letter combinations that I always screw up for someone reason as well. (ble always becomes bly for some reason),.

The problem I see is that games very close to the roll-over date wind up not mattering for karma's sake. It would probably be best to keep a very large list of everyone's karmas annually/seasonally/monthly (monthly would be ideal, but that's a lot of work for something that, frankly, isn't a big deal). That would make it easy to know who flaked when. For instance, if a player flaked in the past often, but got their act together, their karma would be like

Fall '09: -8
Winter '09: -2
Spring '10: 4

Somebody who recently started hosting several games might look like

Fall '09: 3*
Winter '09: 7*
Spring '10: 15*

Somebody who's flaked a game and thus should be watched might look like

Fall '09: 5*
Winter '09: 7*
Spring '10: 3

It doesn't matter if you reset it or not, the whole thing's relative anyways. Whether you have 10 karma or 100 karma, if you flake 3 games, the sudden -15 should be noticed by the community. That's why I think karma's pointless. A lot of it means nothing, it's the flaking that matters.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Well, with the reset I do get to change the system as a whole.  I'm not sure I do like hte 20 to -10 system.. at least the 20 part.  The system is really just for what you describe: to locate flakes and lurkers.  To that end, the *'s to me tell more than the number.

Perhaps instead of a karma number a rating system would work better.  Something like:

S - Active player, perfect attendance - Acclaimed

A - Always plays through except perhaps a requested substitution - Reliable
B - Occasional prods but plays through - slightly annoying
C - Fewer than 5 games - untested
D - repeated replacements and/or prods: fickle
F - Completely flaked in a game: unreliable

That way, instead of trying to keep the whole thing constantly updated, I just need to track games new players play in (those under 5 games).  Along with this, instead of reports on when a game finishes, I just need to know when prods/replacements/flakes happen.

Most players would be an A or B.  C would be purely the 'newbie' rank.  D would be for people that I wouldn't want in games that VITALLY need a full active crowd (hammer games, Bastard Games, ext) and F is for complete flake outs.  S would be rare and require its own specialized system for obtaining.  S's would be the folks who can single handedly keep games going.

With a system like that, I can keep it updated MUCH easier and it would have a better focus on what counts.

This will still be bullshit while there are people who can play 20 games at once and post one liners in all of them (and count as playing)...

I think I'll avoid mafia games for now unless I find one that has a specific list of players who will care about the game.
