Let's make whips!
« on: October 12, 2009, 06:48:54 pm »

Basically, any item that can be set in a weapon trap should be manufacturable, even if it's not directly wieldable by a dwarf.

Prime example: whips!

I'm kinda against this... if ya know how to make something that's going to do damage, that suggests you've got people who know how to use them to do damage. The Soldier came before the trap and all that, if your warriors aren't going to use it, what's the point?

I think that the cultural limitations are good.   Why would dwarves make whips when they don't use them?

For the same reason that the Baroness is demanding restraints be built in her bedroom?

I prefer whips in weapon traps because from my experience, they make the most mess via chunks and blood by goring the victim.

In next edition you'll be able to wield everything, due to major interface changes. If you want to make weapons, just add them to your entity.txt

So, your dream is already a reality upon the next release.

For the same reason they make giant axe blades: to put 'em in traps and let the blood fly.  :D

Better question, why don't they wield the giant axe blades? =D

Meh, personally, I think that a gored limb would pass more blood than a severed limb.
I mean if it is still connected to the heart there would be a constant force making the blood flow, and if the victim survives for a longer period of time, then they'll most likely pass more blood, even if the bleed out due to goring.

So, anyone for spiked chains for whips?

Leather should be the primary component of regular whips. They shouldn't be primary weapons seeing how shit their actual killing power is but hopefully the physics based combat will reflect that

Yeah, they'd be better used for punishment and animal training I think. Those are both historical real-life uses, and would be a nice alternative to the Hammerer killing everyone.

Whips would be made at the Leatherworks I imagine.

Or at metal forges, out of metal and covered in spikes, weighs a ton, and acts like the bastard child of a whip and a mace.
It just depends on the intent, for discipline, or massive amounts of physical disfiguration.

I don't see much interfearing with Dwarves having whips.

In their lightest form they are just a tool for animal persuasion.

As for Combat Whips... That is another story.

I don't think it would be conveniant for Dwarves to have whips. It could be one of those weapons that simply doesn't scale down very well. Though I don't have a good idea of how much shorter Dwarves are then people... Though since they are a 6 and humans are a 7 it may not be all that differnet.

You could always add a trap component Flail if you wanted whip traps but don't want dwarves running around with not-manly weapons.
