Foe like, 5 hours.

This makes you more unhappy than going to the event itself?

I DIDN'T MEAN THAT LIKE A BAD THING, OK?  I WAS JUST SAYING HOW LONG I WOULD BE THERE

I assume a college trained engineering position in the petroleum industry pays fairly well.  Saving up, how long would have to keep working there before you have enough money to move out and look for a another job?
It does, but regardless of how well it pays, I'm contractually obliged to work with them for five years if I graduate from the institute. I'am not looking forward to spending five years on oil rigs (including offshore ones).

It really is a thousand miles away from the dream job I have in mind.

Doesn't he live in the UAE??  Things are a lot different there.
Like women not being allowed to drive on roads?
It's a feudal kingdom with tanks and jets that's only survived as it is because of oil. I think slavery was only banned in the 60's. I pity you if you're a secularist in a crazy place like that.

Oh... ouch, why dosn't he try to move somwhere else?

(There is probably some obvious and horrifying reason a spoiled brat like me sitting up here in a  country whose biggest problem is... actually, I cant even think of any big political problem of my head like this...

Yez, realizing how much worse than me in every possible way, political injustices and personal tragedies I can't even begin to imagine, most people here have it makes me sad.  :( )

If I lived in a secular family I might, but I don't. Suffice to say, my mother would burn me alive so that I would know what hell feels like if she ever reads that. She has used that threat after telling me I was free to choose whatever religion I wished to when I stopped going to the mosque.

Saying that my family is dysfunctional would just be the tip of the iceburg.
Arn't there laws and/or social institutions to prevent that kind of thing from happening?
Like, anti discrimination or freedom of religion or something?
The approval of your parents doesn't follow any law. It is a force of reckoning that will live with you unless you grow cold and heartless to their generation. The only real solution is grandbabies, and that is a long-term plan not likely suited to his problems.

I don't think I've ever known any parent whose child was truly happy with them.

Women can drive here. You are confusing us with Saudi Arabia.
And the reason slavery was banned in the 60's was because there wasn't a UAE untill the late 60's. The whole point of the law was to be accepted in the UN.
