Went to an art gallery. Saw this Rolando painting called "The Mass".

It's basically a bunch of old white guys sitting on a beach in rows, kinda reminiscent of pews (to me, at least). They're all wearing goggles.

The other half of the diptych is this titanic mushroom cloud over the ocean. It's terrifying and, obviously, since I'm posting this here, it made me sad.

Is it meant to be offensively religiously symbolic?

Not offensive. Just religiously symbolic. ATOM BOMB IS NEW GOD and that sort of thing.

The painting is a little dated now, since, if you think about it, those tests happened in, what, over fifty years ago? But it's a chilling reminder of exactly how much power we have in our hands now.

Enough to make death impersonal. Which is probably the biggest problem with mankind today...
sigh...

Aye. Even Roald Dahl makes that note in his sorta-kinda autobiography "Going Solo", which is a lot about his time serving with the RAF.

Also, the short story (I think it's called) "Katina", in Over to You (also Roald Dahl). The titular character is horrified when she sees one of the German Pilots who gets shot down is "just a boy". For Roald Dahl, the planes were one of the ultimate expressions of impersonal death. The bombers especially, who never see the people they kill.

Yeah, but one city. One bomb. That's bloody impersonal.

Do you know what happened to the pilots of hiroshima?

They retired and died peacefully in there sleep years later?

Or are you talking about the fact (most) didn't feel that it was wrong?

Yes, he died at the age of ninety two, in his sleep.

Although, admittedly, on the second bombing about three pilots didn't turn up for duty, apparently.

My old cat, who I had posted a thread about, just died a few minutes ago. 1 year and 6 months after getting her. :(

I've always wondered what would've happened if the pilot, while flying over Hiroshima, suddenly had an attack of guilt and didn't want to become the killer of 40,000 people.  I mean, theoretically, he could have flown away and dropped his bomb over the mountains somewhere...
