Cat's got a couple months in her. We've agreed that, unless something happens to hasten it, next time she's in at the vet she's getting put to sleep.

She was given two months to live fourteen months ago, so she's done very well.

I mean, she's eighteen years old, slow kidney failure for two years, hyperthyroidism, a stroke and at least one TIA, arthritis, deafness, half her teeth missing, frequent vomiting, sleeping lots, and has weight loss despite eating loads. She's not healthy, and we don't want to have her around for our sakes if she's suffering for it. She can't even groom herself any more.

Sorry to hear that, go. Eighteen years is a good life for a cat, but it still hurts of course. I know.

but it all feels bad and makes me anxious and I would really like to have that kinda, ‘normal’ feeling that I occasionally get when I don’t think about him for long enough

Normal comes back after a while. Psychologically and emotionally break ups are like losing a loved one. The person literally absents your life (even if you still see them) as though they've died. While the two experiences are not 1:1, they hit the same pathways and we cope using similar methods. It just takes time. And if you're to the point where you have moments you don't think about them, you're already headed that way.
Thank you, this helps. Break ups working like the loss of a loved one makes a lot of sense to me, and it makes the fact that I’m not done with the emotions more acceptable to me.

Melatonin is not advisable. Take that shit one-time use if you have a jetlag after a journey over half the planet, don't take that shit to combat domestic sleep issues, it will only mess up your sleep pattern more if you use it to combat sleeplessness.
Oh, wow, I didn’t know that. I started using it occasionally after I got off something I was taking for something else but that also put me to sleep as a side effect, so I used it to cope with the sleeplessness I got from that. I probably should stop using it; I’ll ask my psychiatrist next time I see him.

Melatonin is not advisable. Take that shit one-time use if you have a jetlag after a journey over half the planet, don't take that shit to combat domestic sleep issues, it will only mess up your sleep pattern more if you use it to combat sleeplessness. All doctors over here advise against it, and even had trouble combating the internet hype of people who say it works.

If you have trouble falling asleep, you could try taking one or two drops of CBD (cannabidiol) oil before bedtime though. It's pretty harmless. If it doesn't work for you, too bad, if it does, good!
Odd. When my mother tried giving it to me in place of sleeping pills, there was no effect what-so-ever. Maybe because it just didn't work, maybe because my sleep couldn't be any more messed up, maybe because half of pills out there are duds...  ::)

I'm definitely part of the hype, melatonin is the only sleep aid I've ever taken that didn't leave me feeling fucked up the next day. I don't use it any more since it got pulled from the state insurance list some years ago.

Cat's being put to sleep today or tomorrow.

We'd hoped to have a couple more months, then took it down to a couple of weeks because she was definitely very sore. Starting yesterday though she's been having some sort of fit where she starts turning in circles and drooling before coming back to herself, scared as hell.

Price of having pets, unfortunately. Wish there was more we could have done for her.

Thanks for the condolences.

Getting rid of and putting away her day-to-day stuff now (Litter tray, water bowl etc.) since there's no point having it cluttering the place up. That set off the waterworks again.

Yeah, it'll suck for a while, especially with one that's been around that long.

... cherish it. For all it hurts, it's probably better than having lost so many it's largely stopped hurting.
