I already texted.

Already knew she'd be busy. But....a text for your birthday and/or Xmas isn't much to ask if someone really is thinking of you. Kind of sets the gears a turnin'.

Edit: Nah.
Someone was sad on Christmas and they had every right to be.
I had a nice day.  I'll see them soon, it'll be fine.  I'm not going to obsess or be melodramatic.

My father-in-law passed away this afternoon.

“Of course he had to do it on Christmas,” say my wife and mother-in-law, through tears.

As mentioned in the LGBTQ+ thread, my dysphoria's becoming a bit of a feature in my life when I was previously able to get along without it bothering me. I assume I just can't ignore it any longer, or maybe the hormones are having an effect on my brain that's inducing this, I don't know. Regardless, it's making me feel pretty crummy at times.

'I don't get why the Taliban is allowed to continue to exist, they're a bunch of bastards and need to be gotten rid of.'

My Total War learnt knowledge says Alexander's men who stayed on the Indian border were the original Taliban
Learn something new everyday, and damn they're a bunch of ancient bastards.

Jesus, don't be learning that. 'Tis a joke on the region being a thorn in empires' side since forever. After all, there is a saying that Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires.
Anyway, no actual Taliban involved. Even the Pashtuns (dominant ethnicity) don't go that far back.

After all, there is a saying that Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires.

A saying of incredibly modern origin - the term was popularized in a 2010 "America didn't really fuck up, it is just that Afghanistan is too hard" book. It isn't a concept that is all that popular among historians - very few empires have pushed into Afghanistan , what failures did occur (Britain won the Second and Third Anglo-Afghan wars) were more because of interference from other powers (the Soviets) or outright fuckups (the US) than anything to do with the nature of the country, and no empire has actually fallen because of an Afghan adventure - the British Empire was sacrificed on the altar of two World Wars, the Soviet Empire was already teetering when they went in, and the US is almost certainly going to recover.

Alexander's campaign in Afghanistan was successful, and after his death formed the core of the Seleucid Empire, which survived for almost three centuries before being crushed by Rome. It was a birthplace of empire, not a graveyard.

Meh. They were born on the corpse of a larger empire.

My Total War and Paradox totally legit learnins informs me the Seleucid Empire was based in modern Syria/Iraq (or western Iran? I am not that good with precise borders), not Afghanistan. If he had been based out of Kabul maybe Ptolemaios wouldn't have stolen Alexander's heir from his hostagitude at Seleucos' Court and he maybe he would have been able to keep Alexander's empire together.

But I was referring to Alexander's invasion of India, where they kicked his butt.

They didnt. He won. In fact, Alexander was never defeated in battle. Ever.

The reason he didnt push further East was his soldiers mutinying because of constant campaigning and demanding to go home, not anyone beating him.

I didnt know the Indians sidnt beat him. So we can sat they didn't kick his butt but his butt still got kicked by his own troops. It was said in the context of losing the invasion ;)
