Tories have given up any pretext of helping anyone who isn't rich.

This is just depressing. They're actively in the "plunder then cut and run" stage of governance and, to make it even more depressing, they're only polling 10% behind Labour. The future of everyone who's not upper class in the country is getting fucked over, and these same twats are gonna wind up in power in 10 years because everyone will have forgotten about it all, or they'll pretend they're actually different and for the people.

This shit is why people drink. I'd like to do my own cut and run, but I'm unemployed and have no real marketable skills yet, which is another thing that's bothering me. Nobody wants to fucking hire me, even during a time of super low unemployment. I suppose it's probably not spread out, and I live in a semi-impoverished area (Which is to say some bits are pretty affluent, then you go a town over and they really aren't) so a lot of the jobs I'm eligible for are probably under pretty fierce competition too.

God my 20s have been pretty shit overall. I was introduced to them working as a carer for my dad as he died, then he died, then I got depression for five years and had to leave uni because it was fucking me up too much, then covid happened.

So like, I assumed it was just people bombing the movie as bad because two dudes kissed or it showed a butt or a brown person's face or something, the usual bullshit, but is it REALLY that bad?

Like how bad IS the new Thor?

I didn't think Love and Thunder was "bad", it just wasn't "great".  Ragnarok was great fun. Love and Thunder... felt more like a TV movie perhaps?  I think the big issue was that there really just weren't any stakes - no real character development, just people "going through the motions."  It's what you'd get for a TV show if you just randomly picked a person, instead of creating Big Brother by putting people in contrived situations.  The one major conflict also seemed shoehorned in, rather than developed.  And no I don't count the primary antagonist as the major conflict.

Mostly I think the ending was lacking - it really didn't make too much sense in the "what, would the characters really do that?" sense.  It was also missing the chemistry with Hiddelston and Urban and Goldblum.

So yeah I mean if you think every new movie has to give you a new higher-high, then it was not good.  But compared to most other drivel out there - it was still a fun enough movie.

Then again, I liked The Last Jedi*, so what do I know...  :D

*Except the casino subplot.

I truly hate when a bad movie tanks and also has some shitty "representation" in it.

I'm thinking about the Beauty & The Beast remake, which wasn't exactly shitty- I kinda liked it- but I almost feel obliged to defend it because people hate it for being "woke".

It's important to know when to sign off.

I know literally *nothing about Love and Thunder aside from what's in this thread.

I also liked The Last Jedi.

The choices to have Loki slowly killed in the first couple minutes of Infinity War, then promising to write him as queer and specifically trans --but choosing to give that representation only as a split-second note in his file that you would have to pause and zoom in to see--has made me utterly disinterested in seeing more Marvel films. I have simply been screwed with enough times that I'm done for the foreseeable future.

However, Loki was apparently very unpopular as a character according to polling. The general public likes Spiderman, Hulk, and Captain America. I'm not surprised that he was written out of the main stories, since the audience didn't enjoy his scenes and preferred Thor as a main character.

Anyway, the basic plot of Love and Thunder sounds good to me and I do like both Taika Waititi and Christian Bale. But I can't muster enough interest to borrow the DVD from the library and then hit play.

I think a lot of people are beginning to suffer from superhero burnout too, which doesn't help things. It's been 14 years of MCU films, so they've done a very good job to keep going *and* they're still pretty damn popular, but it's kind of beginning to get too much I think.

What I dislike about the Star Wars sequels is that they kind of mess with the ending and conclusions of ROTJ, specifically Anakin's redemption and the prophecy. He was supposed to bring balance to the Force once and for all, and he did by killing Palpatine. And then Palps "somehow returned". Also it's clear that the sequels had little in the way of a plan behind them and so the plot was disjointed.

I'd have preferred if they had loosely adapted the Thrawn books from the 90s instead. They pick and choose things from the Expanded Universe in the new continuity anyways. Thrawn was a great villain. He was different enough from Palpatine, but still very menacing and had a strong cool factor.

I had a hell of an eulogy for my grandpa, but I guess I don't have that for my uncle-once-removed.  That's fine.

We walked together a lot with my mom.  Once we traveled together to Montana, and that RULED!  Like, ... the mountains were so incredibly high up, literally unthinkably so.  It was like walking through the skyscrapers of Charlotte NC and realizing that the Raleigh skyline wasn't shit.  It was... humbling.

And we had that together, except we didn't.  My experience was naive wonder, his was something else.  I may have been 30 but this guy had seen some things in his long life.  But you wouldn't know that by how he acted.

He was humble, and a metalworker.  This is is his memorial.  He touched my life and he was a good person, an international person, who lived in Mexico in his waning years.  He was taken too soon by illness, he was only in his 60's.  I think... I think he suffered, but that's how these things go.

I liked him.  He was kind, and interesting, with a wealth of knowledge.  I never shared my "weirdnesses" with him, but he definitely knew from my mom/his best friend.  He was a cool guy.

I'll miss him.  I'll demonstrate my sadness tomorrow, but I consider this my true contribution to his epitath.

Nah, being high made it worse. I was honestly astounded at how terrible I thought it was.

The basic plot sounds fine sure, but the movie itself is actually a disjointed trash heap.
Obviously some people enjoyed it, but it was so bad. Note that its rating (by real humans) on rotten tomatoes is the same as the Eternals, another panned movie but one that I actually liked more. (Which also was not very good).
