It's really not that much of a commitment. Depends on the season of course, but those suckers are alright being left alone for upwards of a week.

What does one need to do once a week, though? Water them? Walk them around the block? Sing them a song?

Just a general checkup. Make sure they're getting enough food, aren't being overrun by varroa mites, and the hive isn't building up to a swarm (if it is you've done something wrong, mind). If it's nectar flow season you may also wanna check to see if they're up for being harvested.
