The idea that the existence of a savings account and that banks do not pay the same interest they expect when they give loans is somehow a "rich people problem" in America... really speaks volumes.

(The reason it's a "rich person problem" is because I have enough money that I can afford to park some of it in a savings account rather than living paycheck to paycheck¹).

My girlfriend and I are fighting over stupid shit, namely she wants to move back to Israel to raise kids at some point and thought that a good answer to my objecting to the whole "apartheid" situation was that we settle in the West Bank. She somehow didn't realize that this would be even more of a problem.

I'm absolutely exhausted and I don't want to admit this, but the more I learn about the situation the more "anti-Israel" I become. I used to be neutral but then I learned that interfaith marriage is illegal and 97% of the secular Jewish population doesn't want their kids to marry a Muslim. Segregated housing, schools, all that good American style shit. Plus, apparently it's "normal" to publicly call for killing a terrorist's whole family, even if they didn't e.g. kill one of your relatives.

I have no problem with the idea of learning Hebrew and speaking it at home, and would basically be fine with the kids being raised Jewish, but I really draw the line at "passing on culture" meaning "make sure the kids learn to be racist given that one of their parents doesn't have those prejudices." I think it's easy to say that I don't understand the situation, but on the other hand, we're both living here right now ...

And it's only been like two months of dating.

Yeah, as Travveler said its a "rich" people problem because most people in America don't have any actual meaningful amount of money saved to store in a bank on any meaningful basis (64% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck)

Although as Futurama points out Banks are "A place where people put money that isn't properly invested", so by actually trying to "save" money in your bank you just prove yourself one of the plebs.


If anyone here actually has a decent chunk of money in a normal bank that isn't their direct emergency fund I 100% recommend you get it properly invested somehow, otherwise, you are just wasting it (eg. stock market, or government bonds or CD's or even just a normal high yield savings account like Ally bank).

Honestly, getting something like a Vanguard set up is actually really easy, although I did sit on my ass and just have my own money in a bank for *far* too long.

Well, Vector, on the bright side you can say the concept of dating is working: you have discovered that there are some pretty significant differences between your and your partner's worldview before making a more binding commitment.

If you can keep her your friend and be amiable, go for it... but just based on what you've said, I would caution against trying to change yourself to make it work: trust yourself to know what you'd be comfortable with and be willing to sacrifice.

Just in general having a different faith from your partner is hard enough, let alone thinking about moving to an actively hostile cultural area.

Yeah, some banks would invest it for you, if is a large enough wad of cash, and pay you fixed monthly returns. The caveat is that generaly you can't touch the capital in a set amount of years. Personaly knew of a bank that will pay back +4.000 monthly for every million dollars invested, but the million itself could not be withdrew or touched at all for like 3 or 5 years in a row, when you had the chance to renew or stop.

In contrast if you had that million in a regular acount or under your bed and just spend +4.000 dollars every month ir would last you roughly 20 years.

Of course the bank invest that money, probably in loans that returns then more than 4k monthly to have earnings over you money. If you were to invest it yourself at something with a yearly return of a 10% then you would be looking at almost double of what the bank is giving you in the case above, but is more risky.

And Vector, as written above, yes, that is what dating is for. You get to know each other intimately before rushing into anything. Also, would like to point out that while it migth be ealier in the relationship to speak about babies and moving to another country, don't be 100% taken aback by it. The fact she wants to do that doesnt mean she will do it oe that she will do it with you if eventually she does.

Uhm... Wut? I never have my CHS above 19C in the first place. Usually 18.5C, perfectly fine.
What's wrong with people that they put it higher? I thought only elderly care homes and hospital wards set it to tropical temperatures.

Well the ideal room temperature for humans is around 24 c. But is a matter of customs I guess. Being in a tropical place, a constant 19c sounds like a blessing.

What I've understood, ideal day temperature for the naked ape species is 18-24C (with 24C being on the warm sweaty side of things if you are actively doing something), ideal night (sleeping) temperature is 16-17C.
But yeah, it's probably also a matter of, not so much customs as the climate at your place of birth and residence. Our bodies can adapt to climate somewhat.

Iirc, our labour laws says offices and workplaces can not be warmer than 30C for prolonged periods of time. If they are, heat wave regulations apply and employers need to either act to cool down the workplace or cut workdays to have less hours / send people home on paid leave.
