My bike has been stolen. I cannot afford another. This also eliminates my employment prospects, due to now total lack of reliable transport.
Do you have public transport, bike rents, bike monthly repayment schemes, nearby jobs...? Running shoes perhaps? Unreliable transport can still serve as transport

Solution: Steal Scriver's bike?

I would gladly share my bike with Hugo if I had one. But it was stolen...

Even though most Dutch student city bicycle economies are made of sustainable theft, I've never stolen a bike, even when mine got stolen 13 times within 2 years.
It's just bad karma to steal a bike. What if that bike you steal belongs to a welfare mom, who then has the exact same problem as Hugo?

Moral of the story: steal expensive car, sell it for many bikes. Give surplus bikes to welfare moms.

The modern day Robin Hood is riding a bike and also has 12-13 other bikes strapped to his back as he pedals about flinging bikes at single moms and the homeless.

My University has a co-op bike garage where they have bikes in various stages of dis-repair which, for a nominal (5-10-15) dollar donation, they'll happily let you (and help you) fix up and take home.

Maybe there might be something similar in your area?

The forest next to my first home, beside the playground, where I wandered after school, and almost died in the snow, and built a log bridge, and made a cairn for my cat, is becoming a housing development.  Trees stripped, orange clay dirt upturned, some frames in place.  Future street names marked by laminated paper signs.

And all the homes will be ~3 times what I can afford.

The story of Robin Hood is quite exceptional in it's teachings. Every kid grows up learning that stealing from the rich to give to the poor is a good and noble thing, while at the same time they are being taught everywhere else that stealing is bad, mkay.

I don't often swear outloud at articles, but I just did at this one saying "man caves" should be outlawed because idea of a man having a little room which is crammed full of his stuff is "privileged", since it's a "masculine space". When I read that I swore out loud "well fuck you!" because really. the only reason you have to cram all your stuff in a little room is when someone else acts like it's not welcome in the rest of the house.

No asshat, "privileged" people don't hide their stuff away in a dinky closet, they have it in the main part of the house ... have some common sense here. If the man's stuff was spread all over intertwined in the main living area you'd call that "privileged" too because the man has marked the whole house as his territory. It's a power trade-off. The "mancave" means the woman doesn't have to negotiate over decorating the house as a whole. Ceding a small space allows her to passively aggressively control what stuff is in the main part of the house.

Did you read the entire article? It basically ends with the point that men should make their "man caves" into communal "man sheds" where they can actually do the things they want to use their man caves for together with other men and women who share the same interests.

Quote
"Many men  - though, of course, not all - find it much more difficult to socialise than women do and the activities put on by organisations for people in later life, with the aim of social engagement, are taken up by far more women - including social dining and lunch clubs, book clubs, knit and natter - with less provision to engage older men. That’s why Men’s Sheds are such a breakthrough."

“To be able to come to the shed and work and help others gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel a sense of worth and love the way all the men work together,” said one man who joined the movement.

So, men, don't hide away in your man caves. Stop being afraid to express yourselves in plain view of everyone else - it might just do you some good.

I did read that and while I balanced it, the whole thing was still missing the point.

The "man shed" is described as a place for woodworking, metalworking. Not a space for relaxing or expressing who you are. The point of those is that they're outside the house itself, hence the "shed". Basically the article is saying for men to leave the house, lose their internal space and hang in a shed with the other losers.

Quote
Enter the Men’s Sheds movement. (Notice the removal of the degrading term ‘cave’). Started in Australia, these are spaces where men come together to take part in traditionally masculine activities, including woodwork, metalwork, repairing and restoring.

Yeah, but I don't want to have to leave my own house to do those things (i wouldn't do those things anyway), I like having my own space that I can do as I like with. And being told that the "solution" to me having a small personal space is to create a demarcated "men zone" with traditional manly work going on is the solution, and I have to give up the last corner of domestic space that I have as the trade-off. Well they can go fuck themselves.
