Probably for the same reasons that people try to change terms like "fireman" into being gender neutral instead of just giving "man" back it's prefix and then using "man" without it's prefix as a gender neutral term.

Fireman = somewhat sexist, since female fire-peoples exist, too. Not the fun kind, the emergency kind.

Old emtylology shows that Man used to be the gender neutral term. There were other prefixes for both genders, such as werman and wifman.

Werman sounds like wereman, which is half man, and also half man.
