Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Frankly, tell her the same thing. She sounds like, well, a bitch, for lack of a better term.

First draft of speech finished. Took me long enough, but it's done. *sigh* As much as I dread doing things like this, it needs to be done, and I did volunteer.

I have no words.
Programs like those would at least follow a standard of holistic practice--not dogmatic reasoning!
...that is not religion there. It's a reinforcement of a perceived lifestyle of teaching--but a very poor one if taken by itself. Even if used as tenets as a foundation to move forward from, it's...

That isn't right. Lacking clarity, non-critical in nature, and vague in specifying what concept must be faced...[I mean dear goodness. Pray to God that he stops you from drinking--but that ignores half the everything else in the source you derive the idea from that makes it contextual and understandable (and I could go on about this if not due to bad internet but...just what?!]
Even the discussion of wording brings a very bad taste--the statement of noting the concept of being "powerless" is a very unclear superlative, doubly so when applied when teaching other people given the process of communication and...considering the many sciences and knowledge abound, why is this kind of thinking being promoted as a core teaching?

Becauae the real purpose of 12 step progrs is not to help people but to brainwash them into believing in God (which is like the opposite of helping)

If we try to apply christian logic, the limited miserable life here is good cost to buy ticket for eternal fun ride with angels, saints playing rock in garden of eden and stuff like that. And the life without god is not life at all.
So nearly any means of making people join the god are acceptable, as saving their eternal soul is more important then making them feel better in personal lifes.

Well. ...I don't quite think that's the official position.

I think that living a good life is supposed to be enough.

What type of life you lead is secondary - so long as you have faith in Jesus, you're fine. You get a ticket for the angel/saint joy ride at the front gate.

Depends on the sect, I believe. Fundamentalists are no fun.

...I'll just go back to being agnostic in my corner.

The only people who believe that are antitheists criticising Christianity

Really? Well, that's pretty much what I was taught at Sunday school. They didn't say that what you did in life didn't count, but nor did they focus on it - instead they were very emphatic that faith in Jesus is paramount.

But I guess it depends on sect, yet again.
