In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I like Christmas.  At least the music, if not the frantically searching for affordable gifts and trying to pin down what one wants.

So... Basically I like the music and winter.   Okay then.

@Descan: That sucks...
Hope they get better.

So my great-grandfather died earlier today. I don't really think that there was all that much holding him back-97 years is a long time to live, and he had used it to the fullest, but it still hurts, even if I didn't know him very well. RIP

...My condolences, again.

This Christmas is depressingly replete with sads...

I am so sick of Christmas
Agreed.
I've left it too late and have too little money to buy gifts for everyone (and if I bought something for just one person that would snowball into buying gifts for all of the fuckers), so I guess I'll just spend Christmas hiding out at home until it all blows over. Hopefully people forget I exist.

Make fudge. It is cheap, easy, a little goes a long way, and most people love it. A single batch can make presents for quite a few people.

Too true, though mostly it was a bad joke in reponse to Yoink's post which in retrospect, I maybe should of thought about a bit more about.

Working tonight till midnight. Retail, so I have to listen to Christmas carols all night. The work I don't mind, for a start it's air-coned & it's a day's pay for just over 3hrs of work. It's the 3 months straight of Christmas carols that drives me nuts. Is there a mildly annoyed thread, it belongs more there than here.

Speaking of the holiday season, as an Austrailian what's your opinion of all this eurocentric/usacentric "winter solstice" nonsense that tends to crop up around this time of year?

I suddenly got jolted awake by neck pain a few minutes ago, after my neck seemed to be totally healed. Now my sleep schedule is fucked, I can't turn my head for pain, AND I need to make a doctors appointment. Fuck my fucking life.

Hahah, actually I thought that might have been what you meant at the time, I just didn't respond in case you'd just accidentally posted an empty quote and I would have looked silly for reading too much into things. Good luck coping with those carols!

Well, for the most part the whole "families gathering indoors, huddling around the fireplace sharing gifts and dutiful love in an orgy of festive consumerism" thing simply becomes "families gathering outdoors, huddling around the swimming pool sharing gifts and dutiful love in an orgy of festive consumerism" instead.

As for the actual astrological thing, well, I've never seen/paid attention it in either hemisphere so I don't exactly have an opinion of it. :P

I am so sick of Christmas
Same here. No holiday cheer whatsoever for me this year.

In other sads, my insomnia kicked me in the face last night, after a few hopeful fall-asleep-before-midnight ones. I'm so tired but I can't sleep.
