Also you can play blackjack with hookers, but you'll always lose because you have to be over 21 to hire them.

EDIT: Note that the gender-specificness is kind of a historical artifact more than my own internal prejudices, I hope. There are many male hookers, no doubt, and probably they ought not be called working girls.

During the American Civil War, one of the more famous and popular Union generals was "Fighting Joe"  Hooker. Because his camps were always full of prostitutes, and he was a known womanizer, "Hooker's women", eventually shortened to "Hookers" became common slang for prostitutes.


Yes, I know that there's some evidence to dispute this etymology, but the story's too fun to let facts get in the way.
