Yep, turned out they were an odd breed of spam bot that posts discussion bait threads, then returns a few months later and modifies the OP into spam links. Searching google turned up this same MO on hundreds of other forums, with identically named posts to the ones here, most of which had already been edited to contain spam. Most likely goal was some form of SEO for the spam sites.
