Oh, sure, but many of us have just incredibly shitty insulation or live in basements, so there's a major temperature gradient between where you actually are and where the thermostat is. Plus, it's expensive, and people go to great lengths to reduce the amount of money they have to spend on stuff like that, since it often competes with things like food. I never had a shortage of blankets, but I'm no stranger to the "gotta keep warm" rodeo (moreso now that I've moved out of the family's home, though).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

AC is freaking expensive, dutch. Like, all around, from purchase to installment, to maintenance, to electricity costs. They're not cheap. Even stuff like window units can be a pretty heavy burden. Some folks can't support it, or don't want to sacrifice other things to do so.

As baug ninja'd.

In NZ we use heaters. Like, oil heaters on those grossly inefficient bar heaters.

AC isn't necessary (although it's still popular, heaters are more common).

Confortable for me would just be enough to live well with my girlfriend and travel anywhere + super high end computer and internet connection + a bottle of moscato for every day of the rest of my life.
Comfortable for me would be this chair.
Delicious for me would be this sandwich.

Colour me Satisfied. Or an actual, real colour.

Then my weepyface when I have to add 'Colour' to the dictionary.

The extent of my plans for today is having a shower and walking to the nearest 7-11 (it's a decent walk, at least) to get one of their cruddy sandwiches that apparently cost just $2 today. I don't really have much else to do.

RE: heat

When I was a kid, we frequently had no heat in the house, due to being behind in bills all the time. My maternal grandmother is the head of her quilting guild, though, so we were never short of warm stuff to bury ourselves in.

But seriously, do people not heat their homes in the US or what?

My family's a bit atypical, but a ton of people in the US live in quite old houses to which electricity and modern central heating (many still have the piping for gas lights and radiators) were aftermarket add-ons. Proper insulation, while commonly added, wasn't a priority at the end of the 19th century (my home, for example, dates to 1898, and it's one of the newer ones in this part of town), and most of the furnaces tend to be both older, inefficient, models and also equipped with poorly laid-out (due to it being a retrofit) ductwork. Not only that, but a century of remodeling has often thrown the efficiency of the heating layout into chaos (referencing my own home again, when we used the furnace we'd have one room that made you sweat, while others were cold enough to freeze a glass of water that was left on a table), making electric space heaters (preferably the oil-filled kind), kerosene burners, and blankets a much more cost-effective option.
