I'm pretty sure the idea of alcohol is to drink just enough to lower your timidity, but not get yourself hammered. That doesn't tend to end well. Unless the hammer is adamantine.

You could probably do it via some other mechanism than toxins though

Of course. But I challenge you to find one that is as cheap and easy ;)

As social lubricant? I always found peer pressure turned me off from socialising.

Personal opinion, of course. Not necessarily applicable to, you know, everyone else.

If it's friendly pressure to socialize it kinda works.
Then again I'm not good at socializing, so yeah.

I've always considered peer pressure to be negative, but again, personal opinion.

I'm a depressive introvert though, only really started drinking to any great degree about 4 or 5 years ago, and noticed it made it easier to be in social situations, at least with people I'm not entirely comfortable with.

Adrenaline. Speaking as someone who was formerly shy to the point where even my own family thought I was autistic, using nervousness as a source of energy works surprisingly well.

Doesn't really work if you suffer from anxiety though.

I prefer solitary drinking behind locked doors and drawn curtains, and I have no need for a "social lubricant," simply because I don't have anything social to lubricate. :) Alcohol does seem to alleviate the terrible anxiety caused by posting on a non-anonymous forum, though. (I could never have crawled out of the lurkers' limbo without a fair bit of encouragement.)
EDIT: I suddenly realized that this post is rather "sad" and relevant to the thread topic.  :D

Meanwhile I only ever use alcohol as social lubricant because drinking alone I feel is a one-way ticket to alcoholic depression.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

Every person has a unique relationship to alcohol, determined by a wealth of genetic and psychological factors (to some people it gives no pleasure whatsoever). It's best to assume that anything people say about their drinking habits is right -- unless, of course, they're arguing with the doctor who's telling them to stop.

My laptop doesn't work. Again.
At least this time it's from the software side of things, so it won't cost me very much if at all to get it fixed.
Also, this time I didn't miss the shock images. Blegh.

Also, food poisoning. Woke up in the middle of the night my sleep phase with stomach cramps, and about an hour later I turn into a rather disgusting fountain of vomit and gall. It's made worse by sleepy/sick/maybealittlebitdelirious me thinking 'Hey, the floor's linoleum - I don't need a bucket!'
