In my experience its impossibly hard to take the first step to talking to [crush] the next steps are much easier.
just try taking the first step, it usually gets easier!

I too grew up in a small town, so I feel your pain. (assuming it's a small town, because all the signs are there).

And now you understand why you can have people in Afghanistan/Pakistan/Syria/Iraq/etc who hate the United States, despite never having seen it or encountered an American. Because they have small towns too.

In an ideal world, everyone would be made to travel the world for two years in their formative period.

Nonsense.

The hardest part is working up the courage to talk to her.  And perhaps how to break the ice.  Perhaps if you don't have an icebreaker you can start saying high to her when you walk by.  After a few rounds of high, she won't be startled when you start talking to her.

I assume that when you say high, you mean for him to suggest to her that they bond whilst taking drugs? :P

You just blast a cloud of cannabis smoke in her face.

"Hey, darlin'," you drawl as she turns a death glare to put a basilisk to shame on you, "If you gimme your number I'll show you a good time. How's about it, ey?"

She slaps you, but you are not deterred. You repeat the same thing the next day, and the next. True to your friend Peekay's advice, after a while she is no longer startled. She simply slaps you without looking up. But you persevere! You will have her hand, or you will have her high.

In my own sads, I can't see myself getting home any earlier than 8 of the clock for the first half at least of this week.

Spehss,  one time I wanted to hit on this nice jewish gal.  One day, she was sitting outside her dormroom cross-legged with a phone in her hand, so 18yr old me did a push up, and keeping myself at her eye level, less than 18 inches from her face, I told her

'You know I kinda have the hots for you.'

:P
Did not go well.  The point is its all fun.  Have fun with it.

True, but let's remember which came first -- although to be fair, the 9/11 hijackers were mostly well-educated guys who *had* seen and encountered America.

I have a problem with procrastination. I should stop procrastinating and retake control of my life.

...and then I go back to procrastinating on stopping procrastinating.
You're doing it wrong, you should try to intentionally procrastinate so you can procrastinate at procrastination.
Yo dawg, I heard you like procrastinating...
It sounds all funny but it's actually a serious life-destroying problem that really should be addressed and oh look more funny cat gifs on imgur.
