Try-Hard is the dumbest insult ever, and I'd like to ban people who say it from gaming forever.       

Can you imagine if they used that in other sports/games?  Vancouver Canucks win the stanley cup, and the losers call em try-hards?  Somebody wins the 100 meter dash in the olympics, and the guy in second calls him a try-hard?  Its an insult that just boggles my mind.

But those are actual competitions where everyone is trying to win, with no fun involved whatsoever. If one person violates the spirit (if not the rules) of the game the only thing lost is winning.

The point of competitive games is to win.  You can have fun and play to win.  There is a clear goal.  I'm not talking about abusing exploits, but you should always be giving it your best.

I don't think tryhard means the thing you think it means. Aside from exploits, it's also for people who utterly violate the spirit of the game to win, like the L4D example given above where people choose to fuck over their entire team in a cooperative game in order to get the best points/KDR/whatever.
If someone is using tryhard to means someone who is literally just trying hard then they're using it wrong.

Yeah, I definitely get the idea of what people intend "tryhard" to mean (as in someone abusing balance, etc. and ruining the game for others just to win), but it's such a vague term for that that I think it gets thrown around a lot when people are either just playing on a higher level (using things that are still balanced that professional type teams use, but many "average" players aren't good enough to do) or just as a generic "I lost" insult to throw out.

Taking Dota 2 as an example, things like counter warding, using smoke, etc. aren't necessarily unbalanced (though I'd argue that many things in Dota 2 are ) it's just that they are a higher level of play. Yet I see the word "try hard" thrown around fairly often to describe players who do said things in public games, simply because the majority of people don't bother or aren't good enough to use them effectively.

I've only ever been called a try hard when somebody is mad at me for killing them.  I still say its a dumb poor-sport insult in any case.   You shouldn't be insulted for being good at something.  (Frankly you shouldn't be insulted for being bad at something either).
