I have been incredibly tempted to use GOLBAT in some of the recent discussions. For some reason, I didn't.

Now why would you do that.

That ruins the entire purpose of the abbreviation.

It's also oppressing Omnisexual people.

I'm in the process of setting myself up to make a fair chunk of money, but the process is scary and HNNNNNNNGG inducing. Tech contracts are weird like that.

Wait, so just saying transgender is now impolite?

Meh, I'm gonna assume it's an internet abbreviation fad or something.
I don't think it's impolite, per se, but rather that it is useful for giving people want they want. Most trans people like using a word that starts with the abbreviation, but what comes after that becomes very contentious. So the asterisk is just telling them to insert whatever implied finish they want after trans-.

That's more or less my understanding. I think it's worth keeping track of the trends to avoid offending people.

For myself, transgender is not an offensive term. Like anything, it can be if used wrongly.

It depends on how it is used and in what tone/circumstances. Outting somebody is a betrayal of trust they have trusted you with and it may open them up to violence, discrimination, and disownment, etc.

If said with a sneer then it's also bad. If it is made to "put people in their place" as then that is also bad. I've seen it said that "That one's a TRANS woman...." as if stated with a wink and a nudge to remind people that the person isn't good enough. The only time trans status should matter is medically and romantially.I inform the men I go out with of how I am / desire to be so that nobody gets misled. It is a scary and emotionally exhausting process.

"A truth that's told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent."

While I only presume to speak for myself, I don't think "transgender" is a bad term in and of itself. Context matters.

Gay...em....omnipresent....Lesbian...Bisexual...Asexual and transgender!

Omnipresent is there as a filler. I have no idea.

The asterisk is presumably so people can fill in whatever they want into there, heh.

I personally identify as one of the Grunts from Halo, so for me it's GOLGRUNTBAT.

Edit: I put in omnipresent cause I read omnisexual up above. I didn't know that was a thing, so assumed you were filling in the o same as me.

What are omnisexuals?

((All I can think of is Omnomomomom :P))

Omnisexual. That is probably a thing - like Omnivore, but for sex/gender. Or... omnigender?

A non acronym name is needed, because then the definition can be expanded and contracted without the word itself being expanded and contracted.

Almost. The * indicates that L stands for both Lesbian and Little People.
