Given the context of the conversation I wouldn't blame Person A, since bringing up "the gluten hype" in that wording is both demeaning and confrontational given the preceding concern.

Well, the oft-touted argument is that those who say they're X thing for attention/sympathy/"special points"/whatever make things worse somehow for those who are actually X thing, like making it harder for people to take them seriously or worsening their reputation. And I guess if such behavior hurt the interests of "genuine" ones I can see how it might be a big deal. But that's just the thing: who has the right to say who's "genuine"?

Who gives a shit about blame? B was stupid to bring it up without clearly seperating it from A's personal condition, and A is stupid if he now latches onto it instead of pointing out the difference between actual and imagined illnesses, possibly complaining about those whiny gluten hipsters as well.
I was trying to analyze a type of situation to assist in avoiding it in the future. Blame doesn't come into it.

the stigma attached to the things that people are supposedly pretending to be or are doing just to get attention (pro-tip, you can't change sexuality or gender for attention, it doesn't work like that,) isn't worth the attention you get.

I, for one, am just tired of the pro-gluten propaganda on the forums. It's time for this to stop.

It bothers me that you took me seriously.

Look, I love seitan as much as the next vegan, gluten it up for all I care. I was being tongue in cheek.

That you fail to see how person B's comment was in itself something that deserves rebutting is why there's so much contention around these issues. Bringing up "those whiny fakers" is asking for the situation to explode, and when person B doesn't see why that would be the case we get.... the usual we've seen.

Yeah pretty much. Who gives a fuck if they're "faking"? Let them. It's generally not socially acceptable to go from being told about a problem somebody's having to insulting people who say they suffer from that same problem unless you're trying to start an argument. The implication here is so obvious that you really are at fault for missing it. "I'm just saying!" hasn't been a valid excuse since grade school.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

C'mon, I explicitly mentioned B behaving in a dumb way! I just don't consider assigning blame to be interesting.
Reading my post again, I also can't help but notice that I included a rebuttal in the course of action I presented as desirable...

If there is anything the monster pretending to be my grandmother taught me it is that someone is always to blame. Also, that person is not her.

These are life lessons, people.

Start a page or so further back, it's just an example for a misunderstanding common around here.
