This is why I'll be teaching my kids everything I know about fighting. Yes, including dojo rule #1: "This is to be used as a last resort only. If you can't talk it out, something has gone horribly wrong."

While I think you should do that anyway, because it can't hurt and sometimes the bullying is physical, I know the bulk of the bullying I received was entirely psychological. I did get in fights, but generally I barged into them to defend my sister. The people that actually bullied me never hit me or engaged me in any physical manner (except that kid that I didn't give the piece of paper to.)

I thought dojo rule #1 was: "if you're ever in a position where you can use these skills in real life, RUN!"

I used to do Krav Maga. We were always taught to attack until we had an opening to run. As in, disable our target until they were utterly unable to chase us or hurt us, and then flee. I love Krav Maga, it is brutal and unfair, and the entire idea is not to look good form wise doing it, but to fuck up your opponent as effectively as possible.

It's more about the discipline than the actual fighting. Mental toughness is just as much a skill as an inborn trait. It can be taught and learned just like physical toughness, although it takes time, patience, and a willingness to take a beating. My ex-wife is incredibly mentally fragile, and lashes out at everything and everyone for anything and everything. I'm starting to see a little bit of that in my daughter, and it's very worrisome.

I thought dojo rule #1 was: "if you're ever in a position where you can use these skills in real life, RUN!"
Actual dojo rule #1 is: "Take off your damn shoes before you come in." In all seriousness, though, yes, the first rule of fighting is to try to get out of it by any means possible before doing any actual fighting. Run, hide, talk your way out of it, give up your wallet, whatever. I'm...very bad at that part, which is why I rely on my hands and feet (and elbows and knees) to save me.

The thing about turning the other cheek is that it doesn't necessarily make them stop (though some get bored and move on to other targets), you just sort of learn to ignore them and not care what they do. Which is really, really difficult at first.

considering the number of suicides based around bullying, I don't think most people can really stop caring what they do. I had adults tell me that when I was a kid, and it's terrible advice. Of course you are going to care what they do, you are forced to be around them and they are probably the only socialization outside your family that you have. There's no way to turn off your feelings up against abuse like that.

That goes double if your family is also hostile or messed up.
It may be something most people can't learn. At the very least, it's incredibly difficult. When people tell you to do it, it sounds like BS. I think if you're ever going to do it, you have to figure it out on your own. And it's not without it's downsides; for me at least, I just plain stopped socializing for a while. I still think it's a great skill to have, but I don't know if it can be taught except through experience, and ideally people should not have to go through that experience.

Took the precal final.

To summarize the experience, it made me want to just stop taking the test, walk out of the class, and just jump off a bridge rather than continue to take the test. That's how painful it was. It sucked.

Guess I'll just have to cross my fingers, pray to Jesus, meditate to Buddah, sacrifice mead to Odin, and sacrifice a goat to Satan* in the hopes that there will be a curve.

*I do not endorse goat cruelty or worship of the spiritual manifestation of evil. Results may vary. Sacrifice goats responsibly.

I wouldn't sacrifice a goat, but apparently Satanism isn't so bad. I don't know if it will help your chances on the test tho.

Sarcastic exaggeration to emphasize how I can only hope that there will be a curve to save my ass on this test.

And yeah, the new age religious movement Satanism seems ok in theory. I was referring to ye olde witch heresy, again for the sake of humor. And I personally feel kinda "eh" about recognizing Satanism as "ok" because I was raised Christian and still have loose Christian beliefs. If it was called anything except an edgy name like Satanism I'd think it would be quite fine to say "yeah they seem fine and not heretical" and not have to worry about getting my ass smited for saying so.

Personally, I'd rather support that then some forms of Christianity. The devil is in the details, I suppose.

Term is ending soon. I'll have nothing to do for 3 weeks but work, sleep and sit around the house too exhausted to do anything productive.

All of these things are lies where I work (McD's). Hell, I don't even pay taxes as an active thing, they're just kinda taken out of my paycheck.

Yea that's depressing work, I admit.

Even if I was capable of work, I don't think I could stomach that. But man, being able to pay taxes... that's good stuff. You're a part of the process.
