I've been around longer than Zanz and Emp. I joined the forums not long after Elf, and I'd lurked for years before. I've been around longer than ER. And still, I get, like, a 4 on the how well known are you thread.
...is that still going?
There is always a demand for ego-wankery.

This family visit is especially soul-crushing.
No idea why they chose this tiny little redneck town to stay in whilst I visit them... at least the weather's nice and there are plenty of old books to read, but everything else is pretty awful.

Oh, and I'd probably rate myself a 7.5 out of ten, since I know myself better than most anyone, but that still isn't very well.

That thread more revolves around the idea of 'how well (do I) know the person above" rather than a general overview of how well the person is known on the forum.

This.
This actually made me cry a little.

The wonders other people can do when they support you is just as good, or even to a better extent, that what is being done negatively :/
But yeah. Bullying. >_> Stop your children from becoming uncontrolled with their attitude--and better yet, teach them to control themselves...so things like these do not happen.
But they do. :-\
Sad thing goes both ways--overprotection without entrusting your child with their own attitude would lead to an underdeveloped personality...and can go into the wrong, too, depending on the context (ie harsh berating of children when they join social networking sites...just for joining them)

I only ever post on it because I'm bored and it's kinda funny to make up nonsense about people I already know fairly well.

Wow that's dark. I used to go to bed and pray to god I wouldn't wake up when I was in grade school. Sometimes I wondered if, were I to kill myself, would these kids get how awful what they were doing was. Then I realize they wouldn't care. They'd probably laugh about it.

Which is exactly how it goes based on the behavior of bullies after a related suicide.

Mmmm, I wonder what kind of kid I would be if I was never bullied, perhaps one of those stuck up creepy kids? I'm already kinda like that, so I assume so.
Perhaps I could have been one of those mathmatics genius kids, but as enticing as that prospect would have been, if I never had to go on mental leave I probably never would have learnt about my love for piano.
Perhaps that's a plus enough for me.

Not to understate what kids go through with bullying, and if you think about it, it never stops for a lot of people, some on this forum, with bosses or co workers, there seems to be bullying on a lot of levels.

After stuggling pretty hard to cope with it (probably exacerbated by the fact I couldn't tell friendly teasing from actual insults for a while), I finally adopted the strategy of turtling up, ignoring the bullying and withdrawing into myself. It worked very well, though it's left me a bit distant and reserved. Since the start of HS I've been working on being more connected, and it's still in progress I guess. Still, I think turning the other cheek and avoiding conflict have been useful skills for me, but I wouldn't say bullying is worth it to learn them. And in some of these situations, like prolonged physical violence, there's probably only so much that ignoring their words can do.

I remember, there was this girl in my health class, and these other girls demanded she give them a pencil, so she did. And I was like "Why did you just give that to them?" And she said "it's easier if I do." But they still picked on her. I ended up being forced out of the school for a couple of reasons, one being the same situation, a kid demanding a piece of paper from me and I refusing, and a lot of torment after that. (It was also because my sexuality was discovered.)

But I don't feel like it was worse for me than for her. I think I prefer my self respect intact, though I don't really know if it's worth anything but some pride.

I'm not sure if it matters if you turn the other cheek or not most of the time.

The thing about turning the other cheek is that it doesn't necessarily make them stop (though some get bored and move on to other targets), you just sort of learn to ignore them and not care what they do. Which is really, really difficult at first.

considering the number of suicides based around bullying, I don't think most people can really stop caring what they do. I had adults tell me that when I was a kid, and it's terrible advice. Of course you are going to care what they do, you are forced to be around them and they are probably the only socialization outside your family that you have. There's no way to turn off your feelings up against abuse like that.

That goes double if your family is also hostile or messed up.
