I would post a link to a comment i made somewhere a while ago about groups and loud assholes and things like that, but I'm too lazy. Basically, even the best group has a few assholes. The problem being that assholes are obnoxiously loud, while the rest of us speak at a normal or quiet tone. So often you have a tame community that is publicly presented as a bunch of assholes because that's all an outsider can here.
