Is there a recommended timeframe for being concerned about somebody effectively disappearing with no indication?

Apparently you should go and give the police a ring the instant you think they've gone missing (as opposed to running late from work or something). Either it turns out to be nothing and everything's fine, or it turns out to be something and they have more time to look for them before things go to hell.
Oh, I didn't mean that kind of missing. If it were I'm sure family would know before I did.
"Effectively disappearing" just means that I cannot get in contact at all. I'm more worried about severe illness or hospitalisation rather than the sort of thing the police would help with.

My condolences, SalmonGod. We lost a cat last year when it ran away from home and was never seen again.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Condolences indeed. Loosing anyone, human or no, that you've know for so long is hard. At least she went peacefully :(

My sad: I just now realized I do not, in fact, have a 3-day weekend, and my entire plan is based on misconception. I now have to cancel and rush to get stuff done.

My childhood cat was ripped apart by a half-wild dog.

So, at least your one got to live to its fullest ability.

My cat just vanished overnight and we never saw her again. She was getting on in years, and apparently cats will sometimes find some private place to die when they feel the time has come, so...

My last two cats died before even reach the age of 1.

One from FIP (not a pretty way to go)
The other one literally dropped dead (fine when dad went to work, dead when mom woke up half an hour later)

Cats are very....ephemeral at times
