I took it to mean "communism" in the idealist implementation of it, i.e. everyone is equal. It's Marxism when some people become more equal than others.

Communism isn't anti-Christian at all (granted, many communist governments are). If anything, the idea of working for the benefit of a large group (not just yourself/immediate family) is very much in line with what Christ taught.
Capitalism (working for your own benefit, often at the expense of others) is much more anti-Christian as far as I can tell.

There doesn't necessarily need to be. Marx was fairly anti-religion, and most command economy states (that claim to be commies) are anti-religion, but there's nothing inherently anti-religion in communism. Hell, there's a sizable chunk of communists who are so, *because* of the whole anti-rich part of Christ's ministry. Rich man and heaven, camel and needle-eyes, etc, etc. Hurting the least of us is hurting Jesus, and all that. You know the shindig, I'm sure.

To the vast majority of people Communism = Marxism/Leninism (+Maoism). Forcible atheism is a core tenet of Marxism, due to a fundamental part of the dialectic being the "opiate of the people" message. Socialist philosophy in general is also pretty heavily linked with the propaganda of the French Revolution, which made massacring priests a priority. The economic underpinnigs of socialistic and communistic philosophy are entirely compatible with religion, but the trappings in which they were presented (along with quite a lot of other garbage dogma) are not.
