I need to research an inventor for a discussion tomorrow, and I have no idea who to pick. I can't come up with anything that isn't too obvious/generic.
William Murdoch?
Hero of Alexandria?
Emmett Brown?
Wernher von Braun?

Gilbert Toyne (inventor of the rotary washing line, and only that. Not an interesting invention but he was pretty interesting himself)?
Jean Lenoir/Nikolaus Otto for the combustion engine?

There's also the Chinese inventors, but their accounts tend to be apocryphal.

I know of very few Chinese inventions, to be honest. Paper, explosives, rockets, complex models of orbital motions and stuff.

Alexander the Great was awesome.

He was a gay egomaniac who named dozens of cities "Alexandria", after himself.

+1 Ada.

...

Also Ernest Rutherford, if you like physics. Edmund Hillary was pretty awesome. He climbed a mountain or something, I forget.
