I tend to be able to talk about most things, so for the first bit of the convo I will try to guide it to a topic both of us will find interesting, often just asking what they've been up to will give me four or five options and I just pick the most mutually interesting one. If I have a hard time telling if they like one of the options then I ask if they enjoy/enjoyed it/themselves in relation to it. That usually gives me a good idea of if it's a good subject. I tend to cater the interaction to what the person wants to talk about, although I will try to slide it towards something mutually interesting if possible. Generally if I get a initially hostile reaction I try to figure out what got them in a bad mood and help them out of it, if I fail at that then I'm not trying hard enough or using the right method. Some people cheer up from jokes, some from being distracted, some want hugs. It varies, takes a bit of effort to read the person but it ish possible.

Just don't give up, the only time a relationship is FUBAR is when one participant is dead. Just don't give up and keep trying. Random facts and nonsense questions tend to help boost conversations if they wind down after a few exchanges.

...that makes you sad?
I would say that is the bit where you point and laugh before helping her up.

Thanks for the all good wishes, people! Sure, it's just a few lines of red text at most...But it's a warm red text.
Or warm black text. That works, too.

...I feel like I should put another sad here, but I can't find anything that made me sad today.
(And the previous sad is not outright depressing but to say I don't give a single damn about it would be a lie.)

There's been a shooting within walking distance of where I live, right across from the gas station where my friend works, I actually had to take a different road to work because police still had the area sectioned off.
I need to call my friend when I get off work to make sure they're ok.
Shootings are the worst. I still get jumpy every time I hear loud bangs after that guy got shot on the corner right outside. I hope your friend's ok too.

Which reminds, me it's illegal fireworks season again, and while I consciously know better, I can't seem to stop myself from diving to the floor every time one goes off suddenly in the neighborhood.

I found out that the person who was shot was an attorney as they left the courthouse. I didn't know of them, but it still saddens me.
And yeah, the people across the street have been setting off fireworks a ton lately (they start on June 4th, not sure if they confuse it with July or if they are just jerks) and they always wait until midnight to do it, and it always freaks out my cats.

Pretty easy to tell the difference, honestly. Firecrackers aren't deep enough to be a gunshot, and the big aerials have that hollow "chunk" for the mortar (can't be duplicated by anything except a grenade launcher or mortar, which you probably don't have to worry about, and the skyburst is in the sky (audibly so), and usually accompanied by a crackle.

Doesn't stop my subconscious. Loud bang, I'm suddenly behind the couch. There was a 3AM raid on a druglord less than a block away, they used flashbangs and those had me diving out of the top bunk. Also, people are setting off dynamite this week. Someone blew themselves up yesterday, but survived.

My appetite is fucked lately. I can't seem to make myself eat, despite feeling increasingly weaker.

The problem isn't confidence, it's that I literally never know what the fuck to say and always end up standing around akwardly.
Saying something nonsensical is better than saying nothing at all! Probably.

How I ended up being way more confident:
  • Mentally note down how you behave when feeling confident
  • Pretend to be confident by doing those things
  • Continue pretending you think you're really great and amazing for social purposes
  • Maintain for a while
  • End up actually thinking you're pretty great and amazing
Hmm. Maybe I'll try this sometime, although I'm generally pretty unaware of changes in my own behaviour.

Go steal some dynamite and start a mining company.

I can tell I always get quite snappy and angry around exam times, and am happy most other times, and if I feel upset a wall of music generally cheers me up, or writing. The only thing that can keep me down is those damn exams.

Speaking of confidence-related sads, I kinda want to make friends with my downstairs neighbours but I have absolutely no idea where to start being neighbourly. I talk to them if they happen to be outside when I'm entering/leaving my flat, but that's about it.
I once had a cup of tea with them when I locked myself out and had to wait hours for my brother to get home, but that's not exactly a common occurrence. :-\ Being/making friends is hard work.

Also, people are setting off dynamite this week. Someone blew themselves up yesterday, but survived.

...Where the heck do you live, that setting off dynamite is a means of celebration?! :o

Why do you wish to be their friends in particular? I ask because, if it's a shared interest or something, you could ask them to do something related to that, or just talk to them about that.

If you have no shared interests, friendship is unlikely.

Hugo apparently lives somewhere in LA county. I know it isn't near me cause I didn't hear any explosions yesterday.
