Snake never claimed to be Satan, and why would that make sense? The whole thing is meant to be explanatory for why snakes crawl on their belly, but if the snake was Satan, why punish all the other snakes?

... Okay, I'll grant you that this is Yahweh we're talking about, he's all about punishing a species for transgressions of the one person, and families to the tenth generation and etc, but even still, Satan isn't a snake, he's a fallen angel or a demon or whatever. It'd be like if he punished all the dogs in the world for what one dog-owner made his dog do.

In the OT, he wasn't even fallen, he was just an angel whose job it was to test mortals basically. "Yo, God, this Job guy here is really living it up, that's the only reason he respects you" sort of thing.

Yeah, he was basically the God's prosecutor. Or, if you prefer it meta, the Devil's Advocate.
